Why have so many basses?

I’m sorry if I scared u. My 12 gauge is loaded with non lethal rounds. And I would not use it in an argument. I never said it would be used. It was an example. I was also stating that I have posted many times and I have put in more then 30 seconds on the “CONVO”
So most everything you are typing is false and unfounded.
Im not scared of people on the internet that dont even exist in my relative reality. My apologies for thinking that you hadnt posted before and my deepest apologies for offending you by using the abbreviation "convo". Regardless, posting a gun and implying somebody should test you is inappropriate in civilized discussion so Im going to block you now since I dont assume any value will come of speaking to you ever again. (relative reality)

I have read the entire thread and jumped in back when it started... I also understand that dude said his height and weight. But none of that is even in the same ballpark as posting a large firearm with the words "maybe someone should come tell me that I dont deserve it".
If you wish to make the comparison that you dont need to be an expert marksman to enjoy nice firearms... thats totally fine. But adding a picture of a gun and saying somebody should COME tell you that you dont deserve it is really no different from inferring that you will shoot somebody if they suggest it. Its a ramped up version of "come say it to my face" and is totally inappropriate in an otherwise civil conversation.
An interesting corollary, I live about 15 minutes south of Quantico and the club I belong to has about 90% retired military. They tend to shoot old weapons going from 1860 to 1965 and are the most helpful folks and extremely safety concsious. They have seen more real world stuff than most of us have seen in movies. The kids who have seen their action in the back seat of a Prius show up with an M4 AR with 50 attachments and a laser guided bottle opener. When they have problems, the people who use these things in the real world are helpful and never disparage the kid. Lessons to learn.

I can play all my instruments just fine (except harmonica), to my ears, but I will never play in public or post videos of my playing.
That said, I was ironically just lying here in bed thinking of selling all but 2 of my instruments on Monday morning.

Darn those hobbyists for cluttering up the supply chain!

HMM! --What are you selling Brother! Lol!

I think my high water mark was 6 basses. For a couple of years I had a NJ series through neck I grabbed at a pawn shop that played and sounded amazing.... I mean, somebody sold their soul to the devil on this one. The problem was that is was some kind of custom mockingbird body shape. Mockingbird but more curly and drippy. Shaped like the love child of a fertility goddess and cthulu. No guitar stand could hold it. Also it was high gloss light purple sparkle finish. I kept trying to sneak it into rehearsals with various bands, claiming I would never gig with it. No band would tolerate it. It was instantly banned always. Sold it for nothing. Seems like with that bass, even if I had only that bass, it was too many bass.

Started out as funded hobby when I had money to spend on such things (previous careers) > side gig of flipping when I needed the money (grad school) > now paired down to two "keepers" (4003 and Jazz) and two left to still sell. I have a Les Paul at my parent's house too that I don't have the heart to sell, my best friend gave it to me for a song, and he arguably inspired much of this hobby and the way I've gone about paying cash and making deals to make it work rather than by touching my bank account. Sorry for the rant, haha.

Long story short, I'm over people giving me crap about having a few extra basses. No I'm not a pro - I jam at home on my headphones and would probably die if I had to pick up and play with a group tomorrow. But, I can count on few hands how many times I've spent money on beer/meals out/other entertainment in the last several years, and I can guarantee most people I know have spent more on those things than I ever have on basses over the years.

Ned Flanders? Is that you?
Funny!!

Helle diddly doddly noaby doably no Bass Vikingarino

Im just middle aged, broke all the time after working 60 hour weeks to support my nonworking wife so she can play frickin farmville all day. I drive cab so that kinda kills the social end of things for me because not all but lots of our customers cant even tie their own shoes without screwing it up! Oh and I have a vicious temper when I drink and I hate drugs because I saw my brother both loaded and stoned kill his best friend in a motorcycle accident! Also I have been married 25 years so that killed the rest of my urges for anything else lol

On the bright side there is always Jeff Dunham, Walter and Achmed! They always crack me up so I have a good sense of humor about life I guess!!

I have a couple higher end basses for recording but most of mine are cheaper oddities. I like weird stuff and scour shops and online for them, old Westones, Kaman, Aria, stuff like that. I like them, they don’t cost a lot, and half the fun is tracking them down. It’s a hobby and I do play them at shows a lot. I’m currently on the hunt for Soviet era stuff like Borisovs etc. I enjoy the hunt

Certainly not to be judgemental or come across superior in any way.other but i often wonder why do so many people own so many RED basses when they can hardly play one? maybe i am missing something here, but it just seems pointless and a waste. is it perhaps an insecurity thing . you know the more RED basses you have will make you a better player? also it would stand to reason that a serious player would want to "bond" with one RED instrument and get to know it intimately. i would think that is important. in my first years i had one good 80s fender precision bass that was with me for many bands clubs and gigs. i didn't need RED basses. was just wondering what others thought.

I don’t think the number of basses correlates at all with the skill level.

Only in the outliers - like Geddy Lee who has hundreds - and outliers are always tossed form the data set.

I met a guy at CME who didn't even play, he was just there to buy because he like the way they looked on his wall. Showed me picture of his (large) home covered in vintage Fender - "they're great decorations"

I also reported you for implied violence and and am wondering where the hell the mods are.

You have just made me VERY angry....

Congratulations....That's hard to do!....
This whole thread has made me angry. Not sure why certain individuals feel the need to come to the aid of the op. He’s a self proclaimed big boy. 6’ 240lbs exactly. And he’s from New York. People that look down on other people for what they have, and the so called ability’s they possess make me angry. It also angers me when somebody says they are not being judgmental when it just so happens they are being judgmental. I also have other things that I might not be worthy of in someone else’s eyes. Like my truck, or my Fodera. Hopefully the op is ok with me owning these items.

Yup, you're being judgmental. Maybe people just like to hang them on the wall and stare at them. Maybe some appreciate a variety of sounds and feel. Maybe a variety of colors! Maybe they just received an inheritance.
Who cares? I have 4 currently. I've had as many as 7 at one time; as little as 1 at times. Maybe I want a 200MPH FARRARI even though I could never use all of that.
I guess I'm saying (at the risk of sounding like Hillary), what difference does it make?
And DONT presuppose that the owner isn't a more than capable player. What works for you doesn't necessarily work for others.
