Why have so many basses?

View attachment 2910495 I collect and shoot guns for fun. I’m not a crack shot. Just got this ar-10 12 gauge. maybe someone should come tell me I don’t deserve it?

I have a Mini 14 with wood stock. No one gives it a second look. Same round as the race guns. For 12 gauge, I prefer a nice 870. Racking a pump shotgun is a universal sound that tells people to GTFO.

My personal fav is my Marlin 1894 octagonal barrel chambered in 38/357. Same round as the S&W 686 (7-shot so you can fool bad guys that count to 6). :D

For the record I am threatening no one.

More compensating. Just back from 200 or so miles today 2-up on the new ride.

Not absurd. i have been playing since the late 80s professionally. have been in many types of bands from here in PA to Northridge, and Hollywood ca. Played spring break Daytona in the 90s. just so much. i remember a time when musicians were serious and there were not a lot of hobby people. Gibson quality is going down? Music man. i have had to send a stingray back because of fret problems. i could go on about quality control issues. and not just about basses. i also play guitar. had quality control issues. pa system issues . expensive home studio monitors issues. "quality control" is a problem when too many people are buying . not absurd at all.
Ridiculous

Right until this moment I believed you just used the gun as an example because that's just something you happen to like and collect, without any sinister implications. But you just showed me I was naive and the others saw right through you.

Sad.

Indeed. What gave him away was his incorrect use of "your". Be forewarned kids!

Certainly not to be judgemental or come across superior in any way.other but i often wonder why do so many people own so many RED basses when they can hardly play one? maybe i am missing something here, but it just seems pointless and a waste. is it perhaps an insecurity thing . you know the more RED basses you have will make you a better player? also it would stand to reason that a serious player would want to "bond" with one RED instrument and get to know it intimately. i would think that is important. in my first years i had one good 80s fender precision bass that was with me for many bands clubs and gigs. i didn't need RED basses. was just wondering what others thought.

You have outed me. I have five basses right now. Two are RED. I thought a RED bass or two would help since I suck so badly. They didn't make me one bit better, but I still like RED basses anyhow. I suppose that means there will be fewer RED basses for all the good players. I don't care.

I’m of a bent that after 50 + years of playing bass, I’m still trying to get through all the possibilities of 4 or 5 strings and the 13 notes that make up western music, let alone mutiplying that across the tonal range and tactile feel of multiple basses, effects units, amps, etc. That’s me however. I have never needed, and nobody had ever suggested to change or add something to what I bring to the table. That said, I’m grateful my wife only collects plastic storage tubs and Tupperware...

I have one - wait... you say it's BLUE ? That's what I meant to say, why would anyone need so many BLUE basses?

Playing bass is one thing I enjoy. Buying, fixing, setting up, modifying and collecting basses is another thing I enjoy. Although related, they're not the same thing and I can enjoy both equally.

...why do so many people own so many expensive basses...?

The two basses I have are more than enough to meet my needs- Fender P and Geddy J. It has nothing to do with skill level; there are plenty of players way better than me. Like most things, the more you own the more you have to maintain, store, fix, insure, worry about, etc. To me, less is more.
