Why have so many basses?

Certainly not to be judgemental or come across superior in any way.other but i often wonder why do so many people own so many RED basses when they can hardly play one? maybe i am missing something here, but it just seems pointless and a waste. is it perhaps an insecurity thing . you know the more RED basses you have will make you a better player? also it would stand to reason that a serious player would want to "bond" with one RED instrument and get to know it intimately. i would think that is important. in my first years i had one good 80s fender precision bass that was with me for many bands clubs and gigs. i didn't need RED basses. was just wondering what others thought.
I'd like to have a red one. I'd like to have a white one. I have a black one, and there are sooooo many black ones out there. What's the deal with that. Who are these people, Henry Ford? If I did get another black bass, I'd rattle can the one I have now a different color. Probably dark grey. :p

I enjoy them, I am not a pro player, I used to play years ago and I had a beautiful JBass that I had to sell, back then 300 bucks was a lot but I moved on to a different 'scene' (dumb mistake). I used to only have the one when I was 'active' on the scene, it was enough and I loved it to boot. (Well I had the Musicmaster as a backup).
Fast forward ahead and I had been thinking about dabbling in bass again so naturally the first thing I wanted was a J Bass and I got one. I was so ignorant of the market I didn't know Mexican from American or Japanese. Thanks to YOU PEOPLE I am now more knowledgeable.;)
So now I see basses that I find interesting and I have (or used to have thanks to ex-wife) a bit of disposable income so I bought a couple that I had always wanted. (Still can't afford a RIC but soon, oh yes soon, one will be mine)
There is a video of Tom Petty and his guitar collection and it's amazing.
My little collection of basses is very insignificant but it gives me great pleasure to choose between the MusicMaster (hardly ever), the Jazz, the MIM Noir PBass and the Squier VM50s.
I enjoy them, what's the issue?
I also have two rabbits, as some of you know. They are brothers. It seemed cruel to separate these two since they had been together their whole life (and never let out of a cage) so my ex bought both of them and they are inseparable. When they got out of their cage the first time you should have seen them tear around the room. Maybe basses are like that, they need a home. They need someone to play them. I don't see the big deal in having 'more basses than you need'. Bass guitars are SO COOL. I wish I had more disposable income to spend on vintage amplifiers.
Just a comment.Carry on folks.

Drums are my primary instrument, but I also play bass. When I first got serious about bass I bought and sold a bunch of cheap basses in my quest to see what I really like in a bass.

These days I still play drums more than I do bass, and I own several nice basses. AND I just ordered another bass last week. These days I'm a decent bassist, although not flashy. But I don't feel the need to apologize for owning some cool stuff.

I play in multiple bands and have a great rehearsal room. In it I have at least one nice set of drums to use, as well as a few decent tube guitar amps and a nice bass rig. For the past several years I have owned an American Stratocasters, an American Telecaster and a Martin acoustic. For rehearsal no one needs to bring anything. Pick up an instrument and lets get down to business.

Although I'm not much of a guitarist, I've own a few cool guitars for others to use. At Christmas time Fender introduced "Fender Play". I joined and now am working on becoming a more serious guitarist. In the meantime I already have a few nice guitars. Will I end up buying more nice guitars down the road? Yes, that is very likely. And no, I won't apologize for having cool guitars either.

I think this summarizes this entire thread.
