Why is "Metal" constantly being bashed by "real" musicians?

This thread is making me like metal less. Even less than my last metal band did.

It's making me wish I'd never gotten involved..............

It's always the people 50s or older that complain about this stuff, but it's only the ones that never got into metal first. I think that their jeolus that they never had this stuff when they were young.

Eric...please re-read what you posted, and think about it for a second...metal was not invented by your generation...it's been around a long time...it's just gotten faster, darker and angrier...and believe me, no one is jealous over it...lol

I know. It was born around the 70's (In my opinion). The second best decade for rock n roll.

Wasn't Sabbath considered the precursor to metal? We are talking late 60's here.

So 50 year olds would have been around 9 or 10. So that doesn't hold water.

Well, I'm not quite 50, but what's to prevent me from playing metal? I've played everything from classical to punk rock, and from what I've read, metal takes inspiration from those genres.

I can think of one reason, related to a thread you started on why bassists are under-appreciated. When I saw the title of that thread, I said to myself: "I'll bet he plays metal." What I gather from reading TalkBass is that bassists have a hard time gaining respect in a number of guitar-oriented genres, of which metal is one. Why would I put up with that?

Yeah true fact, thats probably the worst part. If you think metal heads get bashed on a general music forum, you should see how bassists are treated in a general metal forum. We're generally useless to everyone in the band except the singer, who is viewed as the 2nd most useless.

I'd thought I'd put in my own 2 cents on this subject and with so many posts it has probably been said before but metal is not the proper term. There are many different categories to metal / heavy metal. Some examples are: death metal black metal metalcore thrash metal, Screamo and what I call poser metal ( the wanta be bands that leave a bad image on the metal community ). A hardcore death and black metal fan like me who listens to some of the heaviest metal there is will not get a long with a poser metal guy who listens to emo kids scream. Some bands I listen to are children of bododm Sodom megadeth metallica iron maiden judas priest, behemoth emperor meshuggah cannibal corpse diminished and the agonist to name a few. Some more poser metal bands are like bring me the horizon bullet for my valentine attack attack and my chemical romance. I don't go preaching they suck on YouTube or write it in public bath rooms I just don't think they can be considered metal nor you should judge the entire genera on 4 or so bands..

There are more than 43 different kinds of Metal sub-genres.

Well see, and please don't flame me for this, the metal culture is all about acceptance. Acceptance of the music, acceptance by peers, etc. Is this metal, is that metal, what type of metal is this? etc.

You question above is what I would EXPECT from the metal community.

Let me tell you a story about "Metal Acceptance". Back in the late '80s, I worked in a music rental place here in town called Music Power. The store was in a bad part of town, and had rehearsal studios in the back. The night guy was this nice goofy Hispanic kid (I forget his name) who ended up in the hospital. Why? Well, we had a group who leased a room by month that were big Slayer fans - they had SS tats & nazi BS on their leather - they were real, honest-to-God metal jerks... So one night, they decide it would be fun to "Stomp a mud" - so they hospitalized this kid working nights because he wasn't lily white. So while it would be unfair to draw a conclusion that ALL metal bands celebrate racisim/nazis/etc - there is a clear & certain element of the genre that does. So there's that to love about Metal. :scowl:

How? I know it's considered to be metal but I don't see how you can judge an entire genera by a few bands like someone. Said ( 2 post above? ) there like like 43 different sub generas just because one band cuts them selfs and screams at there top of there lungs does not mean all bands do the same.

Nobody said that.. and seriously dude I'm on your side, I'm a big metal fan and have played in a few local metal bands, at this point though I just consider myself a listener and appreciator rather than contributor.

Its pretty widely recognized that if your music is:
A. Generally pushing a negative vibe
B. Has distorted guitars
C. Wears dark clothes
D. Downtuning optional

Then you are a metal band. Cutting yourself is just a bonus, and thats how that "subgenre" represents itself, for some odd reason.
