Yeah I was trying to check out an elrick but the guy would'nt even take it down for me. I purchased a 6 string claro walnut and took it with me back to the boooooooteek store and purchase two medium picks from the guy. HAH

This day and age musicianship is lost on the mainstream labels, promotors and editors for the most part. Anyone see a write up or publicity on Esparanza? Bad upright bass playing sista. Anyone depending on magazines and labels to furthur their love of music will be in for a big letdown. All the tools are available to front yourself.

Hey Will you still got all those new basses you can't play? That's what Eric said.
Ahh you know who it is now!:ninja:

Unless your the wrong Will.

Um sorry, I don't think i'm the Will your thinking of;every Bass I own I have no problem playing

it's interesting how some posters here seem to feel that it's bad for some to speak out on what they feel may be unfair.

It isn't bad - but if all you do is speak out, and take no action - it's pointless. It achieves nothing outside exercising your tongue/fingers.

Businesses don't exist to be fair. They exist to make money, and as much money as possible. Should they be fair to you, or fair to their stockholders by maximizing profits?

Is it "fair" that banks will lend money to people with good credit, and not people with bad credit?

To those posters, have you ever felt that you weren't treated fair?

Sure - all the time. That is reality for you. When I feel I'm treated unfairly I try to do something about it. If someone I deal with doesn't treat me fairly, I cease dealing with them.

If you don't feel like BP is playing fairly - boycott their magazine, send letters to their editors, send letters/call their advertisers, cancel your subscription... those are things that can have an effect - because they go right to the mission statement of the company: MAKE CASH.

Fairness is an artificial construct of the human mind... a subjective, not objective thing. A thing with no tie to physical reality.

The real world isn't fair, never has been, and never will be - so expectations of fairness are in some ways like expectations of fluffy bunny kisses and pink unicorns.

For many who can't relate they may have been treated unfairly because of more transitional circumstances for instance They were young or had long hair ect. But they can get a haircut and will get older but I will continue to be black.

That depends on whether you want to solve the problem, or just b*tch about it.

Ever see the movie Clerks? There is a perfect scene in this vein towards the end.

RANDAL: That's all bulls**t. You know what the real problem here is?

DANTE: I was born.

RANDAL: You should s**t or get off the pot.

DANTE: I should s**t or get off the pot.

RANDAL: Yeah, you should s**t or get off the pot.

DANTE: What are you talking about?

RANDAL: I'm talking about this thing you have...this inability to improve your situation in life.

DANTE: F**k you.

RANDAL: It's true. You'll sit there and blame life for dealing a cruddy hand, never once accepting the responsibility for the way your situation is.

DANTE: What responsibility?

RANDAL: All right, if you hate this job and the people, and the fact that you have to come in on your day off, then quit.

DANTE: As if it's that easy.

RANDAL: It is. You just up and quit. There are other jobs, and they pay better money. You're bound to be qualified for at least one of them. So what's stopping you?

DANTE: Leave me alone.

RANDAL: You're comfortable. This is a life of convenience for you, and any attempt to change it would shatter the pathetic microcosm you've fashioned for yourself.

DANTE: Oh, like your life's any better?

RANDAL: I'm satisfied with my situation for now. You don't hear me b**ching. You, on the other hand, have been b**ching all day.

Why do they need it?

Are they losing money? Losing advertisers? Would they make MORE money if they were more diverse?

Unless the answer to at least one of those questions is yes, they don't need to do anything.

They need to do whatever maximizes their profits within the bounds of the law.

We all support the magazine, thats why, the Clerks excerpt doesn't even apply to this situation, it's an utter waste of space.

+1, most of us are subscribers or have subscribed to BP. Most of us are paying members of TB too. Willgroove2 and Jaquo are very successful working bassists. I also want to remind everyone that this is an internet forum. It is a place were people share there thoughts or "talk" virtually. Why is it so horrible to for Blacks to discuss an issue of concern like anyone else on TB? The people who tell the Black posters to stop posting and do something, is this the sort of thing that you post on other threads? If you do, I have missed your posts.

The thread talking about "do something" and stop complaining are coming very close to the "lazy good for nothing" black stereotype, and really goes against the profiles of the posters here. All of us are people who have done things and achieved in our lives, both inside and outside of music.

They aren't in the business of "showing love" - they are in the business of selling magazines, and the only reason they want to sell magazines is to sell advertising.

Money.

Do you even know what the term means. It's simply attention, which they pay to anything they put in their magazine.

They aren't around to introduce the world to new players, they are around to make cash - however they can do so. If putting more emphasis on those cats would make them more money, they would do it.

And you know this is true because who tried this?

I'd be interested in Jonathan's take on that statement... I thought BP was around to introduce us to bassists we might not otherwise know, in addition to other things. Otherwise it would simply be SSDD.

It's the same reason you see twice as much on the news about Britney Spears peccadilloes as you do about real issues - the media is giving the idiocracy what they desire.

If that's all Bass Player mag is truly about, as you clearly contend, they could've remained a section of Guitar Player magazine.

This has been an interesting discussion. I'm surprised it has not gotten out of hand yet. (Maybe I am speaking prematurely.)

i feel like chiming in on a few things Aborgman said:

Remember this kind of "make money at all costs" thinking got us in this world wide financial crisis\problem. More money is not always a good thing. Well, maybe most of the time it is... :D

Is it "fair" that banks will lend money to people with good credit, and not people with bad credit?

The problem with this analogy is that plenty of banks have denied loans to minority applicants with excellent\good credit. I guess that's kinda of the point the others are making.

I agree with this 100%. This is the #1 way to deal with this type of problem with any company.

Thank you Cheese and I'm an ex con :)

I don't support it.

Never spent a dime on it. Pretty sure I've never bought an issue in the entire 27 years I've been playing. May have read a grand total of two or three issues.

The only bass magazine I've ever supported is Bass World - a non-profit magazine put out by the International Society of Bassists.

Complain all you'd like - just realize that it never achieves ANYTHING.

Heck, I'm a world class complainer (just ask my wife) - but I long ago realized that all complaining achieves is exercising your gums.

If you want BP to change - do something. If you don't, just complain. It has nothing to do with black/white/green - it has to do with what is actually a successful strategy for achieving change. Complaining with no associated action isn't one.

Do you know who Jonathan Herrera is? He's participating in this thread.

And even if he weren't, why would complaining here, on a bass forum, not be a way to start a process which could turn into something more than complaints in a thread?

If it's simply that you don't want to see the complaints, the solution is simple... but it's rare that people who are bothered by particular subjects will actually stay away from them.

Do you even know what the term means. It's simply attention, which they pay to anything they put in their magazine.

Absolutely - but they ain;t doing it for altruistic motives, they're doing it for profit motives.

And you know this is true because who tried this?

I tend to assume for profit companies are in the business of maximizing profit.

I'd be interested in Jonathan's take on that statement... I thought BP was around to introduce us to bassists we might not otherwise know, in addition to other things. Otherwise it would simply be SSDD.

I'm of the opinion that all for profit magazines are around to make money - all that other suff is just a means to an end.

If that's all Bass Player mag is truly about, as you clearly contend, they could've remained a section of Guitar Player magazine.

Not if there was more money to be made by becoming a stand alone magazine. If there wasn't, I'm sure they would have stayed a part of GP.

My point is that if you are against idle talk, you should really spend very little time on TB whatever the topic.;)

Come On, Cheese. That statement is lame and does nothing for this thread.
What's the next post going to be "We're being kept down by the Man!"

Why is it so tough for you to accept that BassPlayer is in the business of selling magazines and not promoting the next hot bass phenom (black or white).
