That's insulting to people who care about how things look, and not true for everybody. Looks can be important too. That's why I wear clothes instead of trash bags.

Why on earth do they put carpeting on cabs?

Seems like rat fur is more prone to hold bacteria, dirt, stale beer, etc. than other, less porous surfaces like tolex (which you wipe clean easily with a handi-wipe or paper towel).
I know, not very musician and rock 'n roll to be worried about dirt. LOL. But sometimes I have to put my cabs in my back seat and the idea of rubbing a piece of carpet on the floor of a dive bar and then putting it on my seats kind of wigs me out.

I like my cabinets, like I like my women - fur-less, full-bottomed and ported.

Best way to tidy up old carpet on cabs is with beard/hair trimmers. It gets rid of all pilling and leaves them practically new. Pretty unconventional but it works great.
Not unconventional at all. Anyone with electric hair clippers has tried it...I'd think.
It does work extremely well. So well in fact that care must be taken to not trim too deeply.
I've probably passed out on more than a few filthy dive bars WITH MY MOUTH OPEN ON THE CARPET and I seem to have not suffered any ill effects!

I have an old Windmere rotary clothes shaver which does the same.
FTR: Tolex is rat fur with a Brazilian wax.

Has any manufacturer in the last 10 years used "rat fur" to cover a cab? Or are we talking about an issue that will die out as 80s era cabinets die??
Just like yer suede shoes (blue, or otherwise), a quick vacuuming or brushing, and all the barroom and cat come right off. The cat goes to his "nail salon" every once in a while, so no shredding.
Absolutely. Speaker parts places sell it, it never went away. Ozite is made from recycled plastic bottles, they stress that it is a green product. Tolex is made from pertoleum products.
