Why so many folks selling Shuttle 9.0s?

I love the tone of my Shuttle 6.0, but wish it had more power sometimes. That would make me the perfect demographic for a 9.0....but if it isn't a lot more power, it wouldn't be worth it. Actually, all it has to do is be as loud as one channel of my PLX1804 (900 watts @ 4 ohms). Something tells me it isn't.

....and by the way, my GK MB212 is KILLING at my gig so there's not a lot of motivation right now to get a 9.0.

Gain at 1 o'clock (any higher trips the input O/l)
Volume dimed
All EQ at noon
HF attack engaged
Master dimed

I see some people say their 9.0s aren't loud as well. Some people like yourself and Red say its killing cabs by breathing on the master. Maybe I need to take GB up on their offer to send me another one to test.

It sure sounds to me like you've got an issue with your preamp stage. Have you run a different preamp (SansAmp, Pod, whatever) into your effects return, using your 9.0 as a power amp only? I was doing that last night, selling a Peavey Max preamp, and it was getting freaking loud (through my 115+210) with Max flat and the 9.0's master on 2. Master on four was shaking the whole end of the house. Also, I've never lit my master limit light worth mentioning, and I played a 500-seat ballroom a few weeks ago through the same cabs, no PA.

I would try to isolate the preamp first, and see if that's your problem. If so, send it back to GB for repair/replacement!

One thing that i have read in many of the threads is that the TC amp is shy in the low end unless you EQ some lows in.. So less low end would allow an amp to not use its power reserve recreating the deep lows and will allow a sound a little more mid and present , thus allowing it to sound LOUDer than the LM2 that is fuller in the lows.

What i dont understand is how some folks whined about the Shuttle6 being somewhat shy in the lows unless the Global Low Button is depressed... But its OK with the TC to do similar low shy ... Hey that's why amps have Bass,Mid, Treble knobs.. Just a little turn of any of them will get you where you want.

I own the LM3, RH450, and previously owned the Shuttle 9.0.

There is no lack of low end in the RH450, believe me. The Staccato 51 version is the same amp with a diff baked in EQ settings and that has frightening low end and is very loud.

I tried the 9.0 and although it had more lows than the 6.0, it still wasn't as full sounding as the LM3 or RH450 with flat settings.

I'm not slating the product, just giving my experience.

Not trying to convince you to buy anything. I have both of amps you speak of (QSC & 9.0) and the 9.0 is every bit half the PLX2 1804.

Go back and look at all the arguing threads about "no way a light weight QSC or XYZ will keep up with a CA-9 and other like threads. They are endless. I decided to go the CA-9 route and after Spinal Surgery had to rethink my choices. Finally got an 1804 and it kicks butt at 10 pounds.

There are about 6 camps in this thread, those that have an axe to grind with Genz Benz, those that choose to follow that axe because they can not make their own way (you can not agree with any human being 100 percent of the time), those that are misinformed, those that are trying to run the 9.0 like a MarkBass, those that the amp just was not for tonaly/feature wise, and those that own one and will not let them be pried from their dead hands.

1000 years from now it will not matter any how.

Play what you like and enjoy it.

I was just quoting what other reviewers on TB have stated in there testing here on TB,.. I dont have one so I really could not state for sure...
My point is that is what EQ knobs are for.. If you need a little low boost then boost a little..

I have to say that i agree with you... so +1 lots of axe grinders here...

If we would come up with a good plot, we could almost create a conspiracy theory ..:)

I'm the OP.

Having the opportunity to more thoroughly audition the 9.0 on a NeoX 212, it's not for me. My old Eden rig and my Fender Bassman TV Duo 210 practice amp has spoiled me.

I had an Eden WT-800C but wanted something smaller and lighter so I sold it. The WTX-500 I tried was quite disappointing, it just farted and fuzzed on my 2 DC112XLTs (4 ohm combined). The 12's sounded wonderful with the 800C bridged into them. To date I have not been able to reproduce the tone and power I had with my mini stack. My Fender Bassman TV Duo Ten comes close. It makes a fine rehersal room amp but it's not very luggable nor can I add a cab to it.

If I can't find the right Class D, I guess its back to the 800C or a WT-550.

From what I've read here and the large amount of 9.0's I see being flipped, to me they are a commodity and my perception of value on them is diminishing rapidly. No offense to the folks listing them right now but my personal perception is they've achieved the flavor of the month status like the Markbass LM II and Lakland Skylines. As a closet GAS flipper myself, they are not a good investment ;)

You may want to check out the new Carvin heads, the BX1500 has lots of eq choices and 1500 watts into 4 ohms.

So true, yet Im gigging with a LMII and a Lakland now and I dont plan on getting rid of either anytime soon (unless I come across some loot for a 9.0 or a GB750). You will have to pry my NEOX212 from my dead hands though. ;)

I deleted my statement regarding Laklands and the LM II. On purely a financial perspective, I still feel that way but theres no need to insult a person's choice in tone or instrument.

Both the LMII and the Skyline series are real game changers IMO. Both brought innovative ideas to the market - super high quality stuff at accessible prices. The release of the LMII almost singlehandedly slashed prices of 500watt bass amps in Australia by $500 across the board. Its still popular - transformed into the LM3.

The 5502 I had was the best Fender Jazz I've ever played. Fad or not - that's a seriously high quality stick regardless of where it was made or how much it cost. Imagine 3 years ago someone saying a bass was made in Indonesia - You'd expect something nailed together made out of plywood.

The Shuttle series is also innovative. If people are offloading to buy something else - I think it says more about the fickle nature of some users - not a reflection of the product.

Well I didnt take it that way :). I agreed with your statement actually, because its the truth. I was just saying that despite the GAS effects of TB and the trends of things that get filled in the FS forums time to time, I found two (coincedentally the ones you named) that Im sticking with because they sound and feel great. No offense taken. :bassist:

Lights dont matter.. Use your hearing...
The Red OL light is just a visual aid for you to see if your signal is HOT...
If the yellow limit light flashes its OK.. it comes on about 6 dB before actual clipping. This has been gone over many times in some of the other Shuttle threads in more detail..

So I tried this plan and just got some nasty distortion added to the sound. That's not working. Essentially my previous settings seem to be as far as I can go while still getting a clear tone. I'll call GB today.

This subject still interest me. Not sure why some folks can not see what this amp can do.

Jarret I'd talk to Genz Benz or you guys are waaaaaayyyyy tooo loud.

Last night I played with my heavy hitter band. I played my trusty 51 Fender P Bass straight into the amp. The last time I played with these guys I was using an OCD for some good drive. This time I decided to use just the amp. I dimed the Gain control, set the channel Volume at 12:00, and I could not turn the master past the first line up from zero without the rest of the guys complaining. I was running into an Ampeg 8x10. The drummer in this band hits harder than a PIT graduate on Crack. The guitar player leaves a mark every time he goes for a Solo through his 79 50 watt JMP half stack.

I just do not get it.

And the comment some have made about this amp loosing it's tube amp feel if it's turned down is an out and out fallacy. It reacts just like that same tube amp would if it were turned down. A tube amp's give increases as more demand is place upon it.

Anyway the tone was glorious. The Overdrive was just right. Just enough hair to give it that cranked SVT sound. I must have got the one with the secret magic mojo though I purchased it used from jnewmark right here off of TB and he said his F1 was louder.

One thing I noticed is the Shuttle 9.0's Input Sensitivity is considerably higher than the MarkBass LMIII. IOW the LMIII's input is waaaayyy hotter than the 9.0. I was allways having trouble with the input clipping with my passive Bass on the LMIII.

The other day I hooked up a Summit Audio TD-100 and TLA-50 into the Shuttle. I plugged my Bass into the TD-100 from there to the TLA-50 and then straight into the Preamp of the Shuttle. I set the TD-100 for as much gain as I could get with no overdrive and set the Comp on 3.

Wow that combination sounds really good. It was a pleasure. :bassist:

Maybe it's the type of cab? I know when I had mine, the F1 had alot more balls into my GB Neox 212 T, ( 4 ohms ), than the 9.0 did. It was a wash between the two when using my LS1503 ( 8 ohm ). Maybe it needs more speaker surface to really get it on, I don't know.

+1. I agree with Red Planet. My experience after a couple of months has been nothing but great.

I strive for a warm, but clean tone that is heavy in the lows and low mids--no grit or overdrive at all (other than what we know is necessary for that "tube warmth")--and my Shuttle 9.0 delivers on both tone and power. And I play below the 7th fret more than most players and I pick/pluck above my upper pickup near the base of the neck, both power-sucking traits. The Shuttle 9.0's tone isn't quite as tubey as a head with six power tubes and four preamp tubes (plus 10 times the weight and 10 times the size), but it's surprisingly close.

Johnny, you're right about amp and cab matching. Some just seem to perform better together than others, and I can't always predict which pairs will match up well.

Maybe Red Planet and I were just lucky enough to get heads manufactured on a Wednesday.
