Agreed. I got warned once for "taking the bait" even though I was much more eloquent in my replies. If you acknowledge bait was taken... how about you direct the parenting towards the acknowledged offender.

I wish they'd just let me loose on them. I can make people cry if I want, and that would nip them in the bud

Been here for a fair number of years now...
Agree with most that things are fairly gentle here compared to elsewhere on the 'Net. I HAVE seen some threads where the fur flew pretty good...they tend to show up in certain sub-forums. So I just avoid those areas and hang out in my watched threads full of chill people. Disagreements will pop up in those threads from time to time, but it's always kept to a dull roar.

Keeping the politics off here is a good thing...I see friends of mine on Facebook going ape-poo with partisan politics (I mix with a wide variety of folks so I hear both extremes) and it just saddens me. Give me goofy like the post above me any day (that squirrel is cracking me up).

Compared to other social media TalkBass seems very positive and uplifting. Sometimes things cross lines regarding politics but the mods seem pretty good to nip it in the bud. That said, I don't feel there's a necessity to protect anyone's feelings when they post on a public forum...you get the answers you get.

I've owned three Alfa Romeo's and I'm a big fan, (Alfaholic is the term) so I joined the AlfaOwner forum. I thought I knew a fair bit about them but Jeez, some of the people on there have a serious superiority complex and don't mind bringing you down when you're wrong. Some of them could even tell you what Nicola Romeo had for breakfast on the tenth of June 1924!

How about saving Talkbass for legit questions and answers

"J vs P", "Which is the best bass for…", "Ohm question", "Is Playing with a pick okay?", "flats vs rounds", "sandals on stage", "new vs used", "cheapo vs boutique", "Chinese shorts vs American shorts", "tube vs solidstate", "bigger amp or more cabs"….

The list of "dead horse" threads that come up weekly is endless.

Still, a lot of them are very funny and entertaining (incl; the snarky comments!)


Newbies often ask questions that have been asked a thousand times before.

This is a forum called Talkbass not "get your informations elsewhere bass" or "shut up and read bass"!

Newbies that come with a question will always get their answer on TB! (I love TB for that reason!)

It depends a lot on how they ask a question,

whether or not the answer will be friendly, funny, snarky or sometimes even outright mean.

A thread that starts with an opinion combined with a question will get a lot of backfire.

A lot of people won' t answer the question. They will just react to the opinion part!

Applauding or catcalling. It depends!

"P basses are great! Should I buy one?" will get another reaction than

"All Fenders are ! Which bass should I buy instead?"


This is live! I don' t think we can change that! (Nor should we! That would be boring! IMO)

keeping it light-hearted and well, simply less...nasty.

Yes! We should take ourselves less seriously! Who am I to decide if a question is legit or not?

(but I like being nasty sometimes! )

I think it's also important to note that we all have our good days and bad days, grumpy days and rosy days, etc. I've seen a few people here say that they feel they've sometimes failed to live up to their own standards. I think most of us could say that. The important thing to me is that we do our best most of the time and forgive ourselves and also each other when we're not living up to our ideals.

Yea, except when its not. R#$%$ and P#$%#$% are easy: just ignore, it works better than a charm, and never causes anyone any impact at all (except those that self-inflict by participating).

Its the technical bass and equipment discussions that turn confrontational that I think might be a tad worse here than other forums. I've been lectured and dismissed rudely because I offered actual observations that contradict theoretical assertions. This being a social forum, the correct course is to agree to disagree - not insist on subjugation, lol, as if we have rank and title here. We don't, even if some think we do.

Social Media has made people a$$holes, plain and simple. It's a bummer.

I would stipulate that it allows them to be themselves with relative impunity.

Just be sure to start off with asking about that blind test where the audio sales guys thought the coat hanger compared well to $1000+ speaker cable.... or, how $1000 power cords make everything sound better (oh, wait, I have heard that in bass ads also).

In the UK we also have Hi-Fi fuses at (up to) £100+ a pop, to go in the plug on the end of the £10k mains lead you just bought. You can also get them to replace the fuses in your amps etc. should you feel a burning desire to void your warranty. I have it on good(?) authority that they make a "night and day" difference.

I first came to TB in 2012, and am by no means a frequent flier. Come to get answers from a wealth of historical threads from time-to-time, to poke around when I'm bored — and mainly to browse or buy/sell from the Classifieds. Just bought and sold basses here in the past couple of months — interacted with super people in both cases.

HOWEVER, it seems to me that the tone in a lot of the threads today — versus even 7 years ago — is increasingly hostile, snarky, impatient, and just plain rude. Why? This isn't a politics forum — we're talking about an instrument (albeit cool as heck) that produces low notes. Not too controversial...

If people want to start picking passive aggressive fights behind the safety and comfort of their PC or smartphone — CNN or Fox is ripe for this, with plenty of comment threads and fireworks for your entertainment.

How about saving Talkbass for legit questions and answers — attacking the OP less, and keeping it light-hearted and well, simply less...nasty.

Switch to the Double Bass side of the aisle. Different ballgame.
