I keep thinking if I want to buy a new fender pbass for 1500.00 but these squires and glarrys with their maple satin necks are are so nice..time will tell
Buy the Squire, pass on the Glarry. and buy used. HUGE difference for a couple bucks more.

I'm amazed that people who buy and sell a lot of basses on here (like me) insist on buying new. Why would you continuously take that automatic deprecation hit, when you can buy a mint used bass that you will always be able to sell for what you paid?
Probably because they can't find what they want used or are just leery of buying used online? In any case, someone's gotta do it.
Well said! After a few threads wondering if the prices of given basses are justified, I have come to the conclusion that it just isn’t worth worrying about. If you cannot afford a bass or don’t think it worth the price, buy one that fits your budget and call it a day. We are fortunate to be consumers at a time when quality instruments are available at many price points. I say spend your time getting better instead of getting caught up in instrument prices.![]()
By all means, do what makes you happy! Why not like … save money and buy thé boutique jazz.
I know I wouldn’t be satisfied with a lesser thing even if it means getting it in a year or more
It ani't about getting what you want as much as wanting what you have. Well done sir! Can't really afford anything so lucky for me I have one bass I love to play. Still have gas though.
This is precisely why I think big forums like Talkbass, TGP, TDPRI etc. should have separate sections for collectors and players. The two groups have vastly different goals and neither is right or wrong but a player would never balk at replacing a rusty 1960s saddle whereas that move would send a collector through the roof.
I was just thinking about this movie not 5 minutes ago, and this scene, too!!! Greatest comedy of all time!
but with regard to Doc’s OP, I for sure can’t afford a new SR Special 5 or a Kiloton 5, so I’m doing what every true bass tinkerer would do - build my own for half the price. I’m 3/4 off the way there.
And I like eggs & grits, too…
Thanks very much Patty. I neglected to say that Eric's Guitar in Sound City, Van Nuys, CA did all the mods, and paint is done by Pat Wilkins, also in Van Nuys. They do great work for me.your collection just blew me away. you turn average ordinary basses into basses into higher-end, gorgeous, great sounding basses. the paint jobs were superb, too.
I often reference Marcus Miller because in conversations like this because he reached GOAT status playing a bass that I think his Mom bought for $275. I remember him doing the tour with Victor Wooten and Stanley Clarke, I think Marcus’ Fender sounded pretty good compared to Wooten’s Fodera and Clarke’s Alembic.
These days, Marcus Miller uses a Sire five for his fretless segment. If the GOAT uses modest basses, I can be happy with them too.
For me, fretless BFR ...Very true, Doc. And yet, I still crave a Rob Allen bass that I will never be able to justify because of the cost.
It ani't about getting what you want as much as wanting what you have. Well done sir!
I get it!!! I wasn’t willing to pay full asking price new for one either . Especially since I never played a Fretless anything before. All I knew is that I wanted to add a Fretless to my arsenal . It made since to me to go with a bass that I was already familiar with so I would have less struggles with intonation. I was blessed to find a mint used one at a GC about 50 miles away. I took the drive asap and bought it. At $1k off the new price , I would have been a fool to pass it up. I bought it and was able to register it with full warranty. For me, fretless BFR ...

Used basses can be awesome deals. But used basses were once new; if no one buys new, it limits what is available used. Not just that, it can possibly put a bass manufacturer out of business.I'm amazed that people who buy and sell a lot of basses on here (like me) insist on buying new. Why would you continuously take that automatic deprecation hit, when you can buy a mint used bass that you will always be able to sell for what you paid? I buy from a trusted seller with good feedback, and always get a great bass free of defects. I've really enjoyed buying and selling basses for the last 8 years. I've met a lot of great people, and have come pretty close to breaking even most times. I'm financially able to buy any bass I want, but I work too hard for my money to waste it.
Why do it with your mouth?

Probably, but not my money. I just want drool worthy pics of stuff I can't get myselfThis is a good sentiment, but if I make a NBD thread about the decked-out Fodera I’m getting next week, there is a 100% chance it will devolve into four pages of bickering about money.
