Why worry about price?

Makes total sense. I’ve played two basses today. One cost me over £2k, the other just £100. They’re both great fun to play.I’ve done lots of gigs in the past on cheap basses (when they were all I could afford) and loved doing it!

As you rightly say, enjoy playing whatever instrument can afford, and don’t cry about the ones you can’t. Low price instruments these days are incredibly good for the money anyway, and many are just plain good, period.

My £100 fretless P bass…

That is a good looking bass!

I try to buy smart, but at this point have more stuff than I can normally use. Basses are near impossible for me to list for some reason. Last three basses I've bought have been used or clearance, for what I though was ok to great deals. Pedals can come and go, but basses are forever.

Until I figure out how to say goodbye and get some listed...

Keep in mind Marcus has quite the collection of basses including Foderas and Wals, and many, many others... Yes he plays less expensive basses but also owns/plays the pricey stuff too.

Last I checked his net worth was $5 million, plus I suspect he has probably gotten some freebies and artist discounts over the years. I remember once that he donated a number of boutiques to UNESCO to raise funds for a project.

That said, nobody thinks Fodera or MTD when the name Marcus Miller comes up. We think Fender and maybe Sire.

Pretty much. There are basses I want but will never be able to afford.
There are basses that are stupidly over priced and I will never consider buying them.
There are basses I will spend significant money on because I want them, and if someone doesn't agree, that's their problem not mine. I will greatly enjoy making music they hate with my instrument they don't like.

At least he used to. I remember him selling off the majority and keeping just a few Fender Jazz basses. Marcus isn’t playing anything other than those Fenders and Sires in public anymore. But I know his business deals/ image and what his public expects of him has much to do with that. No one goes to a Marcus show to see him play anything other than his 70’s Jazz basses. We let the Sire slide because it’s essentially a copy . And we let the bass clarinet slide too because , well it’s just cool !!

Your solution to Recession is for people to go out & spend money on things they don't need?

I think the Extreme Consumerism we've been under for decades is what's causing it.
No. The extreem consumerism is from behavioristic sales manipulation creating an addiction to endorphins
via buying things. The selling of a narcicistic dream. It isn't from crafts-people pricing their work at a living wage.

I have said many times that I admire Marcus Miller as a businessman as much as I admire him as a musician. Marcus Miller knew that bright Jazz Bass was his signature in the studio plus it was the look with which he became associated. He basically created a Name, Image, and Likeness, deal like so many college athletes have these days.

dude got his money's worth
There is a video of him back stage recently with that Hofner. He was talking to a bunch of people and in the process of talking he went to take his bass off or on and he wacked the headstock on some over hang he didn't notice. Those around him freaked out, he was a little, meh.

Probably not the first time.

:)

Hey, it was just some cheap bass that he bought way back when; I recall him saying that, once. ;)

McCartney can honestly say that he is the reason that Hohner is worth anything:
