I am astounded that people here, of all places, are not more concerned about the idea that someone can enter your workspace and assault you simply because they do not like something you said. As performers, is this something we want normalized? Does every comedian and entertainer now need to worry that someone's going to feel entitled to walk up and smack them in the face because they saw a celebrity do it on TV? Sheesh.

I've been concerned about that since at least when Dimebag Darrell was shot in my hometown.

Exactly. When someone doesn't clarify which type they're referring to and just says "alopecia is a medical condition" they are oversimplifying it.

My musician friend who was shot and killed at Cafe Racer in Seattle several years ago wasn't even at a gig, he was just having breakfast at a venue he played regularly. :(

I only met the bass player once at a party down here but my close friend Drew who was also shot that day, and was in one of the same bands with him, also played bass and tuba along with many other instruments.

I think most here are not particularly chill about the attack.

I personally don't think Smith did the worst thing in the world, but your point about who will be the next Will Smith, in attacking an artist, does give me pause.

This is a "bit" different as it was essentially done in a private setting, in spite of the TV cameras and press. The Oscars are more or less a private party, invite only, etc. In other words, they were all amongst "friends". The performer/audience dynamic is a bit different. [NOTE - I am NOT justifying his actions at all.]

If Will Smith was in some local comedy club and the same thing transpired, I have zero doubt he would be removed by security, held until authorities arrived, and arrested if the victim chose to press charges.

He certainly acted overwrought in the vids I’ve seen, but hey, he’s a world class actor so unless he reveals his true motivation we’ll never know if he was sincerely sorry or if it was CYA.
