Got my top in today! 10 minutes before I had to leave for workDang second shift really screws up waiting on deliveries.
Scoops, I really like the left sample better, out of the two anyway.

I will agree that the finer line of the one on the left is more appealing. The trim was suppose to be black. In the pic it looks almost white. Looking at it live, it looks graphite grey. That particular strip won't happen on this build. Now if I got some maple....Hmmmm. Haven't decided the stackup yet, but I'm glad I'm running through some tests. The other thing I'm testing out is the bevel.
I'm usually a carver of a big ole hunk of wood/bolt on sort of guy. This is extremely adventurous for me, and I'm starting to get into it!
As you said @Scoops, I'm also a bolt-on guy... but I'm thinking neck thru or deep set neck on this project. After all, a hippie sandwich needs layers. Laminate testing is definitely a good idea:
This is maple, walnut, walnut veneer, and some cedar veneer I found. Not pictured is what an angle grinder can accomplish for some crazy sculpted edges.
And FWIW, I just rebuilt/tuned up the bandsaw, getting new planer knives soon, building a new router table, got all kinds of supplies on order... The 21st will be a glorious day! I'm ready for action.

Funny thing that. I'm still not settled on my final plan for this build. In fact, I'm not even down to the final 2. It will be one of three things though. 2 I've built before. One is something I've never built before. I'm tending toward that one. Though weird things tend to happen on new designs. I guess I'll have to decide pretty soon though. I also ordered truss rods, frets, and few other things, still yet to arrive.
@mapleglo, that is one of the most amazing looking tops I've ever seen. I'm super stoked to see that in action, whatever route you go for

Got almost everything ordered in! Just need to get some strings and my fretboard. Looks like I'll finally get to play along, we'll see if I actually get finished in time

Heh, based on my recent experience, make sure the one they gave you actually FITS. A standard 4mm hex key is a sloppy-a** fit in my non-Stewmac DA rod, and inch sizes are definitely too big. I'm probably going to have to find a 4.5mm wrench and file it to fit. No more cheap rods for me! My inherent cheapness has been nothing but a source of trouble for me.
Truss rods came in, along with some stainless steel fretwire, and a caliper. Really StewMac, I buy 4 truss rods and you send one truss rod wrench?

LMII started selling the wrenches separately. This makes sense to me, as, having previously purchased a number of rods from them with included wrenches, I now have a pile of identical wrenches sitting on a shelf, and who needs a pile of identical wrenches?
It's like the complimentary Ikea Assembly Tool, I must have 20 4mm hex keys from them. I lose them like candy, so bring it on! Is anybody using the Stewmac "low-profle" DA rods? They look just like the cheap blue-taped ones you can get on ebay, but I have no idea if they are better or worse quality. I got my crappy one from Best Bass Gear (also blue-taped), so I can definitely say don't buy one of those.
Just checked - the wrench fits each rod well. Oddly enough, I don't ever remember buying a rod, either from StewMac or anyone else for that matter, that had an out of spec hex. You must have gotten the one bad one.

I was thinking that if I were building 4 basses for 4 different customers, perhaps I'd want to give each customer a truss rod wrench. I guess if I were building 4 basses with these rods, I'd have to pull a Rickenbacker, and make each customer buy their own
These are the low profile StewMac truss rods. I've used these at least once before. These have black tape wrap instead of blue though. I've used the BBG blue taped, as well as a few of the eBay versions. No issues so far.
