So If I go the sandwich route, I'll probable do something like this. The cap would be flamed walnut, with paduk as an inner layer. The bevel would expose the padouk, and much like an SG bevel. Not sure if I want to put the raised center section in though

I'm so torn on this.

As I usually like to challenge myself to things I don't normally do, something about this challenge is telling me to go with something tried and true

Said another way, I have a vision of a build, and it is complex! Do I want to go with the vision (hippie sandwich with custom beveled sides to the body and a laminated thru neck) and risk f'n it up, or a simple bread and butter bolt on?

Arrrgh!

This is what's putting a monkey wrench in my plan. I'd like to, but I'm not sure I want to be on a time limit for mine....that and I don't know if I'll have all my design figured out for @Gilmourisgod in time. I really haven't had time to make any progress in almost a month...

This, along with all the love and support that I see throughout the LC that got me to really jump on this project in the first place. I got some down time on Sunday so hopefully I'll be able to get everything ironed out then and post up a teaser.

Worse case scenario, get something workable that's heading the direction you want and post up here for some design help. We may be competing, but I've watched enough build-offs to know it never stops anyone from helping each other out. Everyone here wants all involved to succeed!

Hello friends,
So, what I saw as a moderate chance of getting in on the fun here.... just turned to... none...
Displacement,... fate...one door closes to open another.... etc...etc... Great... I am actually a nice guy, with integrity...so I don't mind riding on the Karma train too much. (Better than being under it)

Anyway.... I just wanted to share a little reminder for anyone who,... like me....was 'wrestling' with the idea that 65% & over, was kind of a lot o'walnut...
(Not that it's a bad thing, of course)

This may have been mentioned already....but...
What I was planning on doing to create some interesting contrast.... Ebonizing!
The Feric Acitate thing works well on walnut.
You can turn it darn near black!
But it is still walnut!!
Huh?...... yeah!.

A few more walnut neck laminates

Found a nice piece of straight grained 3/4", and had the guy mill one end, and cut me a couple of 2" strips for neck laminates. I should definitely have more than enough for a multi-lam neck now. I also picked up some maple veneer which I may use for the body laminates.

Get the bark off it; before you have bug problems. Wax or paint the ends. Sticker it (narrow bit of dry wood holding the planks apart.) Should be ready by 2019, if I eyeball it at 50mm or less thick correctly. That short, you may have serious losses at the ends - the wax or paint is to try and mitigate that loss from excessively fast drying and cracking...

Looks quite nice.

Going to be black walnut and shagbark hickory. I've got all my pieces and parts ready to go. Just waiting for the 21st to get here.

Since I'll be unemployed and working on my thesis from January anyways I started drawing a new design (logical, right?). It will be the little fretted brother of my first bass and I intend to re-use the leftover neck piece. If I calculated properly it will be exactly the right size, give or take 1 mm. I'm afraid this implies that neck will only be half walnut at most, so I'll be in 'for bacon and beans' (means just for decoration ).

Besides the leftover neck piece I have this big chunk of walnut that I got from a friend who made a gunstock out of it once. It's full of large knots so I hope it's good enough to make a body from. Then I have an offcut of a birdseye maple fingerboard I got for the friend I help building one night a week at my place. I'll use the leftover ziricote from that same friend's build for my pickguard if I can.

I'm planning a four string bolt-on with a P-bass pickup (hope I can wind them myself) and one concentric knob
