Winter Build off 2018 - Walnut Free For All - Get Ready!

Let's do this. We still have time. Keep looking for pieces of walnut that suit your needs. If you can't find what you are looking for, I'd be open to an exemption, but lets exhaust our possibilities first.

It's almost a month, so I was wondering if you have made any progress on finding some walnut for the build off

Jon that wood is gorgeous, such a rich color! Is it Am. Black Walnut or something else?

As previously mentioned, I won't have enough walnut in this build to qualify for the contest, but I thought I would at least let you know how my walnut slice from the farm in Gettysburg turned out. We managed to salvage a bit of the sapwood for a nice center stripe in the book matching. I was hoping for a nice top and a matching back, but I am not in love with the knots which would reside on the back side. They look to me like eyes which are very sad. I wish I was in love. You never know with a chunk of wood what lies within, but eventually you find out. If the knots were farther up, I would love to see about carving them into a cool owl as an art piece. Will let the subconscious work on this, but to get a nice top out of this wood does make me very happy:

Sure looks like you have plenty of wood there to work around the knots if you don't want to feature them. Of course, you might try flipping them a different way if they look "sad" to you one way.

Hey T Bone

Yeah, I need to live with it some. Forgive the edits - but after some pondering - I love character in wood, and knots normally don't bother me much, but music is joy to me. Not sure I have ever seen anyone frown with a guitar in their hands, ya know?

I certainly don't need sad eyes on my bass, but the other option is to double the width by gluing the other sections on underneath to be part of the "hollow out" to make the walnut wider, maybe with a nice ash or maple pinstripe between them. That could be the ticket. I am happy with the top though, and I have a nice piece of chocolate/vanilla wenge that might make a nice fingerboard for this. I have to see.

Actually, Leah has spoken and the reality is - it will end up being something more like this. Family matters ya know:

Ahhhhhhhhh......

The Walnutty goodness

I'm so torn on this.

As I usually like to challenge myself to things I don't normally do, something about this challenge is telling me to go with something tried and true

Said another way, I have a vision of a build, and it is complex! Do I want to go with the vision (hippie sandwich with custom beveled sides to the body and a laminated thru neck) and risk f'n it up, or a simple bread and butter bolt on?

Arrrgh!
