Winter Build off 2018 - Walnut Free For All - Get Ready!

Yeah but Frederiek is in the Netherlands.......
Yes, I'm aware.

"English walnut"...grows in Britain...and the Balkans peninsula area.... (I think)...That's not too terribly far from the Netherlands... ;)
I looked this up but my brief search couldn't find retailers in Europe. There's gotta be some out there.

What if... you'd make a neck-through and the body section of the neck makes up for the 65% that the laminations in the neck lack? For example, if I'd like a neck section of 60% maple and 40% walnut but with a block or some extra layers, Fodera style, in between body wings? I tried but have not been able to source nice, properly sawn and dried walnut full length for a neck-trough but in this way I could still comply to the rules :)

Frederiek,
As others have stated, "English Walnut" should be available to you", as it appears to be available on the other side of the pond. You have a bolt on possibility as well.

It would be great to have you in the build off this year. You do wonderful builds!

Let's do this. We still have time. Keep looking for pieces of walnut that suit your needs. If you can't find what you are looking for, I'd be open to an exemption, but lets exhaust our possibilities first.

Lets revisit this in a month.

In the meantime PM me the dimensions you need. I may have something.

Found this online

Planed All Round American Black Walnut Timber | PAR Walnut Wood

I don't know how pricey shipping from the UK would be.

I also found this

Hope these help, I'd like to see as many builds as possible in this build-off! Reading the threads as they get constructed is WAY more entertaining than anything on my overpriced cable tv subscription

Ok I'm in also (have ofically informed my wife). Last year I made a Tele for one of my sons and loved the way it turned out. May have to make a bass Tele to go with it.

Hey folks, not sure where I’ve been but haven’t been around here for awhile! So glad to sign back in and find the winter build off gearing up, and based around my favorite wood! Love me some walnut, I’m so in! I have had some recent inspiration for a new design that I “may” try out here. Can’t wait.

I might be in on this one, got some big planks of plain sawn walnut, formerly intended as stair treads. I'll cap it with figured walnut I have yet to find. The 60% walnut on the neck might disqualify me, I was planning on mostly rock maple with walnut stringers, more like 30% walnut. I'll let you wood geeks call it one way or the other once I get rolling. If I don't qualify I'll just haunt the thread like a vengeful evil spirit, moaning and rattling chains of Woe and Intrigue!

I was planning the same idea for my build. Love the walnut stringers...Since I'm working on a bolt-on, if I can source enough walnut for a neck count me in!

Here's a quick (spent less than 15 hours on it) free hand concept/test mule of my plan.

Related to this thread, I was looking through a local hardwood place that sells mostly dimensioned lumber, and found a couple of lengths of black walnut that are entirely sapwood. They are each about 3.5' long 1x4s, so dimensioned down to 3/4"x3.5". They were at least double my usual bdft price for raw lumber, but entirely sapwood in that size was worth it. :D Pale binding perhaps? Or blocks for inlays?

Just due to the time frame waiting until we start, I have a feeling I'm going to overthink this build... :D

Edit: I also forgot to mention that one of my favourite nearby suppliers carries quartersawn black walnut fingerboards - but only has them listed in guitar widths/lengths, so I sent them an email asking about the dimensions I'd like to see. Worst case scenario, I could make my own fingerboard, sigh...

Ok, so what's the best walnut oil for metal?:bassist:

I'll go away now

Walnut oil with [Invalid or Expired Link Removed] added to it, I suppose, though I'm rather fond of the fact that you don't need that, actually. Stuff makes me a tad nervous, frankly. But it sure will help you get your Heavy Metal on just like an animated movie from 1981.

So in reality, I find this quite interesting. I gravitate towards oil finishes, so it looks like ill be doing some tests with walnut oil

Thanks for the heads up
