Point being... couple yrs. ago, my local woodseller had a shopping cart full of "figured" black walnut billets. Mostly crotch...
They were selling for between $15 & $20 ea.
I grabbed.....um....several.
I used about 6 sets myself
I sent one to Michael Harwood.
& have 3 more I am keeping.
I have minimal labor in resawing & thickness sanding,... because I did them all at once... back when I had a 24" wide belt.... (oh I miss that lovely machine)
This one I am happy to part with.... to a good home ...someone without a woodseller nearby.
Alex has first dibs if he wants it.
I will cover shipping to the 48.

Massive Thanks to @Rôckhewer, I got the pieces of crotch walnut in the mail today, absolutely gorgeous wood, and the key to my build. In the same spirit, id like to offer my CAD drafting services to anyone out there who has the need of a 2d set of plans (Rockhewer first in line, of course) Alas, I don't have the software or skills for a full blown CNC 3d file, but I've gotten pretty good at scaling photos of designs and translating them into accurate 2d plans. I also have access to a 48" roll scanner and printer, so i can print drawings full size on one sheet of paper. I've done this for a couple TB'ers, and it seemed to work for them, PM me if you have a drawing in mind. Gotta love LC!
I did some light surface planing on the planks I got and there's some decently long, straight grained pieces. Ideal for neck or core wood. Feel free to PM. I have quite a few and it's gonna be cheap, just shipping and/or minor cutting costs. These boards are THICK, too. Pics and dimensions available.
I wouldn't call it a pile, but I have a bunch of curly pieces. Not sure if it qualifies as rock though.

Yeah that start date is creeping up on me - it doesn't feel far away. It's easily going to take me that long to prototype a headless bridge...

Doesn't look like I am going to qualify for this Walnut Build-Off 2018.
We spent a lot of time with the walnut chunk from the farm. We are trying everything we can to preserve the sapwood on the edge, and make it part of the center of the design when book matched. If we simply shave off the bark - the majority of the sapwood will be gone. Jon had a great idea. We are going to quarter saw the board:
This should get rid of most of the bark and should leave the inside board with just a little nice sapwood along the edge, which is what I want. It will also be quarter sawn which should add some strength. Jon advised not to use the left edge of the board for a neck due to the grain structure. He is 99% sure it wouldn't be stable. So in the end I will only have a top and a back about 1/2" thick, but I would rather do that and keep the sapwood in there. The two "wedges" could be glued together to make another board which could look interesting when sliced open, or as Jon says - "might be a mess".
The whole thing will now disqualify me because the walnut will not hit 65% of the build. So it goes. I am much more interested in keeping the legacy of this sentimental wood from the farm intact, and maximizing the potential beauty of the wood. I don't love walnut enough to buy more, I want to dig into the stash of wood I have which is on the way soon from L.A.
I am thinking I might use my heart pine for the internal "frame" since you will really only see the edges with the walnut back and top - and the heart pine looks pretty interesting on the edges. It's very heavy - but I have two 16" X 24" slices from a huge beam that is well over 150 years old:

It can look pretty nice when distressed with a wire brush, and if I use it as a "frame" only - it shouldn't be too heavy:

Just took delivery from my walnut guy. Here it is fresh off the mill:
Told him what I needed and asked if $50 sounded fair. He said sure and proceeded to deliver about twice what I needed.
Easily 2 bodies and 2 necks here.
