Winter Build Off 2019 - Kubickenbacker

Unfortunately, there's no action shots of it. Basically, you push the clamp mechanism up, slip the string under it, and it clamps down like it's being fretted.

Also unfortunately, it never worked well. The whole thing was a boondoggle and I regret it. If you tune to A, then clamp the string, it's not tuned to a B. The clamp kind of pushed the string closer to the E string, which made it slightly out of tune, and you'd have to tune it at the bridge, which defeats the purpose of a drop tuner.
I had to make it happen for the theme and I wish I'd focused on that aspect earlier in the process.

Long and short is, this bass ended up looking a lot cooler than it functioned. I still have it, but I robbed parts from it for this year's build-off (times are tough, what can I say?).
The lesson for me was, if you want a drop tuner mechanism: use Hipshot detuners.
