Winter Build Off 2019 - Kubickenbacker

Well, I'm happy to hear there will be carbon in the neck layup.

You could get cuter yet and have the not really very functional shape there, and a wall-mount bottle opener just screwed to the headstock ;^) Do get it engraved with the name, of course...:D:D:D

Wow, it seems like I've been gone a month from this. Personally, the holidays are just a huge hassle for me, so I'm incredibly glad they're over. Now I can get back to the shop.

Since we last spoke, the task was to actually make templates take shape, make a full size drawing, and start this thing on the move. Truth be told, I don't even have the wood for the body yet. And the neck veneer is still not sliced or glued, so I feel WAY behind. But you gotta get back on that horse somewhere.

I cut the body template out, leaving the headless tuner section in tact, in case I decide to make it a cove, not a full cutout. I also left space for a neck mount tongue, as this isn't going to be built like my usual tenon. It will have a heel shape kind of similar to that Rick profile.
Once that was done, I unrolled some parchment paper and started drawing...

And yes, I will be making that little hook into a bottle opener. So I had to make sure it would actually work, sized as it was. A dummy template was made and used for rough testing:

This should work, no problem (and no, I didn't open the beer yet). The general idea will be a metal hook that will grab the top, but that will be built into the headstock. I've got a few overcomplications to consider here, because "OVERCOMPLICATED" is the underlying theme of this build. But the basic point is, a 1" circle is perfect for popping beer bottles.
 
It's the last one I have. I know a guy who used to be their rep and he's an avid collector. He gave me a case of Bigfoots, from 2003 to 2008. Older than '08 was pretty flat and kinda ginchy. So I hope this one is still good! It's gonna be my NYE beer treat.

And yeah, the shop doesn't see me when I've been into the sauce unless it's for some cleanup or maybe some drawing. Tools are off limits when I can't quite see straight. My vision is bad enough as it is.
 
After the tire on my bandsaw went bad, I kinda ended up in a bit of a funk. I used the time to assemble a couple of other basses I had in the works, only to discover a number of issues with those.
So I wasn't really feeling it... until today!

I managed to fix the saw first thing this morning. That felt nice.

My initial idea of doing the neck plies as thin strips, glued widely: stupid!
The better idea: glue the veneer in wider sheets, then cut those into strips, gluing those together as boards.

I'm not sure if this will work, but I gotta try. The veneer was piled up, and I switched the orientation of each piece, not that it would really matter.

Then I put glue all over! I mean, this neck is technically going to be composite now. A composite of Titebond 1 and maple veneer.

If it fails, I'm going to wider slats and a more traditional multi-piece neck. But it never hurts to experiment.

As for the body, I wanted to keep this cheaper, so I'm using pieces that I have here. There's a lot of random maple that I'll be turning into a full body. I started with these pieces and will either do this like a hippie sandwich, with top and back pieces... or like a clam shell and just make 2 halves like this.
It's gonna be a solid color, so I don't care.

The drop mech still makes me very nervous, and I also realized that the headstock shape would keep me from even fretting that area... but it is just a drop mech, so it's unlikely that I'd need to fret a Bb anyway. More on that debacle as it happens.

The string clamping method is also still a mystery. I know it will be metal and screws, but that's as far as I got.

And one big factor in this build is that I'm purposely making it overly complicated. So even if something is as silly as threaded inserts everywhere or a drop A or making my own plywood from scratch... that's what I'm going for here. It's part of the Kubicki side of things.
I can always simplify later.

Oh, and all you other builders... GREAT WORK! I've been watching those and really loving what I see.

After 2 days being pressed, I unclamped the veneer - it's still wet. My guess is, this neck material will turn out to be an absolute mess. So that blows.

The body blank half that I glued up had a crack in it. No big deal, I just glued that back together. But it's just another added annoyance to the whole thing.
I'm gluing the other half together now. Hopefully that is a little less fickle.

Of course, I start looking at the overall design again and see that the neck won't really so much be in a pocket as it would be on a ledge. There's not much wood to either side of it. So that brings up the debate of what to do there:
- There will be threaded inserts (maybe Bruce Bars) holding the neck on, using machine bolts. So that will be attached very tightly.
- But it's attached tightly to a small portion of wood on the body, so I'm relying on that being strong enough to support the neck tension of a 5 string. Not that bad... as long as it never falls over.

That brings up the following mod ideas (which follow the overcomplication process again):
- Make a back-mounted tenon for the neck, ala Human Base

- Make it neck-thru, ala Rickenbacker
- Make it a set-neck, which isn't either company but could be considered a mashup between bolt-on and neck-thru
- Come up with some crazy neck mount scheme that hasn't been done before
- Add support to the neck mount area that would go through the body. Carbon support bars, for example.

So that's even more fun stuff to mull over.

It's only about an inch and a half. The total bolt area with the tongue is about 4" and it would be 6 bolts.
But I think it will need to at least go through the neck pickup cavity. Kinda like PRS does with the CE22/24.

Plenty to ponder on this.

It's no secret I'm a fan of epoxy for gluing. Some system three G2 would take care of your neck glue-up. 90 mins of working time, and in 24hrs, it's a brick. :D

I am exactly the opposite. I dont like working with epoxy glue. I would any day of the week use a really good and strong wood glue - Titebond. In fact, I have used veneer for necks, several times - with several different types of glue. Titebond is by far the glue I use after that testing.

Couple of things. What type of glue are you using? I have had problems like this with different types of glue. Especially if the room you are using are slightly cold or wet or something like that. I actually glue most of my necks on a cardboard in the living room - because thats where the temperature is the best.

Second. I have build a set neck that was longer than normal. I actually ended up making the top a neck through. Looks pretty cool to :).

The layup was done using Titebond 1 because I had a lot of it.
I know it's a glue that people frequently use here and I started building with it a couple years back, thinking it was great. But then I read much later that it is known to shrink and expand (creep), which I noticed in a lot of my builds. Anything I did with layers of wood or even fingerboard/neck joints, body joints, etc, I'd feel a line there eventually.
So I kinda hate it now. It's fine for construction, but I don't plan on using it for as much as I initially thought.

People have talked smack about Titebond 3, saying it may be more flexible and not suitable for builds. But while watching an F Bass factory tour video, I saw this:

So if a company like F Bass can "scrape by" with that glue, I think I can at least give it a fair shot.
I've had some in the shop for making cutting boards and it is really a nice glue. It flows very well, it dries strong, and it's been fine for the past few builds I used it on.

As for epoxy, THAT is some crazy stuff. I'm just scratching the surface of its capabilities, but from the drips and excess that dry into basically hard plastic in 24 hours, I'm impressed.
The thing is, I don't want to use it unless the situation calls for it. It was $160 to get a gallon of it. TB3 is $29. And since this was a risk, I tried the TB1 because that is $16 a gallon.

If I had a press and vacuum bags, I'd probably do something with a billet of epoxied veneer.
Then again, if I had that equipment, I'd probably make a carbon fiber neck and call this "Kubickenbackerodulus".

It's cupping, it's still not dry, and I don't think it's gonna be viable.
On the plus side, it feels VERY strong.
