Winter Build Off 2019 - Kubickenbacker

Well, the sub-pickup bolts idea is pretty much a dead thing, which kinda bums me out. That would be cool, but there's just not enough under there to make it work. Even with shallower pickups, I'm not going to be clamping through enough to make it sound.

On the plus side, there's a ton of meat to make contact for the external bolts. I'll be using some pretty beefy inserts and machine bolts to make these two parts hold together. So that is cool.

The drop mechanism was kind of dead to me, but I think I want to try it. I have some new ideas and inspirations, so I want to make that happen. Of course that means a headstock reshape, but it will likely be what I had in mind on the first concept drawing:

There will still be enough Rick shape to keep the bottle opener (and I just found a plate of aluminum to use from my box of bike parts, so that's awesome!). I'm not going to do the mech like Kubicki did, but I still want to make that area playable. So it will be more like the upper half of a Rick headstock, the lower half of a Factor.

What is giving me fits is the concept of clamping the strings at the headstock. I'm trying my best to make it look snazzy, but also want it to hold strings well. Looking at some other designs, I think I have the general ideas in order. I want the clamp to be hidden as much as possible and I want the strings to be anchored at an angle, so they have very little chance to slip.

Big question is: What should I make that out of? It's between brass or aluminum.
- I'd love to find an aluminum that was more resistant to stripping out when threaded. I'm not sure which alloy is tried and true (7000, 7075, etc?), but I feel its lighter weight and ease of machining by hand make it a good candidate.
- Of course, brass is kind of the industry standard. You can cut and thread it easily enough with hand tools. But it's heavier.

Any suggestions where to get either of these in small billet form (3x1x3/8" - ish)?
And if you have any inspiring DIY project pics of something akin to what I need to do, I love pics!

I've bought from these guys on ebay: Brass Flat Bar Stock 3/8"(.375") x 1" x 6" C360 Extruded Rectangle Metal - 1pc | eBay

They also carry aluminum stock. As for the best metal to use, @Bruce Johnson would be a good person to ask.

Actually you probably won't need attaching screws much larger then typically used. With the length of your tenon the mechanical advantage is greater then a regular bolt on neck configuration. As a suggestion I wouldn't go too overkill. I've contemplated this kind of attachment before and like your implementation.

How about if you use string ferrules to pass the strings through to the back and have your clamping there out of sight?

I was actually thinking of just making slots in the top area, then the strings disappear into those, kind of like Leduc does...

They also have a similar idea to what I'm thinking for the clamps, but a little more bulky than what I'm after.

There's no harm in a little overkill... I'm thinking 5/16" bolts with wide heads, which act as neck mount ferrules, kinda like these:

It does fit the overengineered theme nicely.

EDIT: I just looked through some older Bruce posts on aluminum alloys and see that he's got a few good recommendations out there. For example, 7075 is what he uses to make aluminum truss rods. The fact that it can be threaded well and hold tension means that it is likely what I'm after.
I'm sure McMaster Carr has something for me to ogle.
(actually, Speedy Metals seems to be much better)

I decided to see if any local places had some metal that I could snag. This certainly isn't like shopping for groceries or anything! I managed to find a place that had a few things of interest, so I made my way there and bought more than enough to experiment.

I went with 1/2" x 1", because you can always remove stuff, it's harder to add it.

Snowed in today! Hey, I don't mind. That keeps me in the shop.
Since I couldn't make my way to get small hardware bits (and I really need to order the bridge before going too much further), it was time to do some wood work today.

As weird as it may seem, that drop A mechanism and the fact that I had to trim off the bottom of the headstock made me kind of excited. So I went with it:

Now there's the matter of inlay. Kubicki does none, Rick does a ton. So I have to come up with a middle ground of some sort.
- Dots don't seem like enough. Neither company does dots, so that seems silly.
- Perhaps a scaled down, 80s stylized sharkfin of some sort? The side dots on a Kubicki are...
