Winter Build Off 2020 - Get Ready

Hey @Scoops, curious about the rough dimensions on that there chunk of lumber. I'm a little more reassured that my little local lumber shop I've been frequenting has reasonable prices after seeing this. They also post all "board foot pricing" on the wall as well, so there's no hidden agenda or "tonewood pricing".

My chunk of zebra, roughly 10"x1-1/4"x50" ran me about $95. The one that hurt some was the giant chunk of Wenge I snagged. We're talking 12"x1-3/4"x70"ish was somewhere in the $100 range. None of the "off-cuts" were big enough to suit what I wanted to do with it. They wouldn't cut the big chunk down, so I took the whole thing. Don't blame them one bit, and even when he said "Nope, buy the whole thing" I said "Yup, had to try but totally understand, wrap it up."

That's about what I'd pay too. My retail place will cut off pieces, but they dont carry a lot of exotics. The wholesale places price by board foot but sell full boards only.

PS.. you should totally enter the build off, man.

Just do a cheap bolt on neck and make a solid body with some kind of chamber for the airspace component. Even if you don't finish, the trial-by-fire will hone skills and no one will judge. On the contrary, the support and encouragement will be excellent.

We are going to do something a little different this year, and we are going to offer a second build off that will follow directly after this one

Not the same fanfare of winter build off, but an opportunity to complete that project that's been stalled out, for what ever reason

Not quite sure what will happen here as we have never tried this before, but it does give people a plan "B".

Oh I totally agree @Beej and I would, if I actually had a woodshop at my house. The shop I'll be using for my first build is a 2 hour drive away at my boss's house. I don't even own simple hand tools at my place. So the time constraint just doesn't seem "doable" for me. It would be crazy fun, but I just don't see it working out right now.

I am NOT in the build-off. Just asking for comparison's sake on some pricing. There's no way I could get anything done in that short time frame. So, like @Fat Freddy I'm just here to drool.

I don't have the experience or skill...

I think I'm suffering from analysis paralysis.

Need a push off the ledge so to speak

Hmm, since I'm pretty confident I can finish in time, maybe this will help out since there won't be as much pressure on everyone else... "oh, I'll just finish it in the spring"...

I'm having issues finding the right wood for my build, I have been through three or four iterations of wood for the front. I've planed so much wood in prep, only to put it back in storage. I thought I figured it out yesterday, but this morning I'm questioning it again. We'll see where I end up. I hate to even think about going down to the wood place, but I might do that.

You gotta just commit man! Grab one chunk of wood and go "this is it, this is my piece!" and that's it, you do it.
