Another approach...
Let everybody build at their own speed over the span of a year or so. (doing thier own filming)
Each builder cuts down to say 30 minutes of the best stuff
All vids are thrown together into a single vid (Much editing)

Some kind of video collage would be very nice to watch. It's a lot of work for someone editing the whole material.
Could ask the builders to shoot a short vid with a description of the bass and playing sample. Maybe no more than 1 min each. I'd edit them together if everyone wanted, they could be posted in the voting forum, or just in the completion post of each build.
I would be concerned that the video quality could affect voting...
Just cause you can build a killer bass doesn't mean you can shoot a quality video or sell the bass to voters in that video.
And conversely, I bet I can't build a killer bass, but I know my video editing skills are a bit better than most -
I'll do a completed instrument video, but I haven't delved into the build process video yet. It takes so much time to edit and I think setting up cameras and angles would kill the flow of my build process. That sounds stupid, but when I'm building I'm totally engaged in what's happening. Kind of like a good bike ride (I hate making biking videos for the same reason).
FACT! Most people don't realize just how much time goes into editing. That simple minute and a half video I posted above was probably an hour of editing time, for just over a minute of video! I tell people all the time "Expect to spend a solid hour of editing for every minute of video length". It's crazy!
As for camera angles, in the racecar I tend to know at this point what I'm looking for, so it doesn't take a lot of setup for different angles. The same wouldn't be true of something like bass building where I don't have the past experience to draw from for what angles I tend to like or look for.
I did a music video for work last year that started with four musicians sending me audio that I had to mix into a song, then something like 20 non-musicians playing cowbell along with the song we recorded. It was played on massive screens at a work event. It came out great (considering), but it took me easily 40 hours to mix everything and get the videos all lined up. Many of the non-musician's video files were not timed well with the audio, so I had to slow down or speed up their videos to make them fit. One guy played half tempo, his section made him look a little crazy after I sped it up 2x.
Of course after I got it done an executive didn't like some aspects of it so I had to start from the beginning on the video editing. It was fun to see everyone's reaction, but man that cost me a lot of time!

Sounds like a real PITA.
Yeah I need a Shinto rasp...it's really hard to get smooth lines with a sander. Thanks for the reminder and tips. Whoever said they use a file on mdf makes a ton of sense, same idea and probably able to get smooth non segmented curves with much more ease.
I'll be the crazy wild idea guy that knows just enough to be dangerous for himself and those around him!
It wasn't that bad considering I got paid to do it (kind of). The worst part was when I talked to people after they played the video, they thought the musicians were playing along to a backing track, they didn't know that was all us playing. I guess that's a testament to good playing (and mixing) :-D
