Winter Build Off 2020 - Get Ready

I thought your job was :drool::drool::drool: from the sidelines, creating small lakes.

Yes, I think I'm in.
Think I've got the answer for this year....

Thought a couple of these just might do......:D.....

I'm in (I think), but I still haven't decided between the sub-woofer-on-a-stick or the travel-bass-with-internal-storage. I'd try to make a logical decision, except that neither is that logical in the first place.
A suitcase bass that functions as both is a cool idea (and a nice twist on the air space theme!). I'm not sure what sub-on-a-stick would look like... but I want to see It! (Bass drum body, upright neck?)

Only one logical move... both :D

It's also super useful if you don't need a full amp and pedal board, you can fit a couple pedals and all the cables inside so you can just carry everything in in one thing.

The squiggles are close, but not quite. Think of an acoustic body with internal folded duct work like in a labyrinth speaker. The theory is that the length of the duct is chosen to accentuate lower frequencies.

Put a neck on it and and use the bridge to drive the speaker and voila - a Sub-woofer-on-a-stick.

Don't ask how or why I thought of this. There is no coherent answer.

Sounds awesome, would you leave it boxy? Design something more like the size of an AEB? I'm totally intrigued :thumbsup:
 
From the research that I've done so far...
  • The length of the duct is related to 1/4 of the wavelength of the target frequency. So to tune for low A at 55 Hz, the duct should be about 60" long. This should help amplify half an octave up and down.
  • The cross section of the duct should be as close to the cross section of the speaker as possible. This would make the body far too large, so I plan to compromise on this rule of thumb.
  • I'm thinking of having a bridge on some kind of resonator cone in place of a powered speaker.
  • The duct should be damped with lots of sound absorbing material to reduce standing waves and pesky guitar frequency wanky sounds.
  • I will make the rest up as I go along.
Given the above, I would try to make the shape look like a "normal" ABG to conceal the Pandora's box, within.

You could make the ducts in a spiral, with a cone sitting in the middle, discharge through a port on the side

A clear acrylic, or the like, top would be sweet. Could see the labyrinth, that or do it on the back. Love the idea though!

Oh and I'm in, not sure if I'll have time to finish, but who knows!

Just got the black limba for the body! The countdown begins!

I wonder if you got "MY" black limba

I ordered some on EvilBay about a week ago

After a few days, I got no tracking number

I posted a question to vendor on EvilBay

The vendor responded via phone
"Sorry, thought someone contacted you".
"We shipped your boards to the wrong location"
"The person we shipped them to wants to keep the boards"
"Sorry, thought someone contacted you"
"Would you like something else"?

Needless to say, I asked for my money back, and the vendor very quickly closed the post.

That's OK.....I found the swamp ash I was looking for.
