I'm going to try to build one.
I've done a drawing and have enough wood and parts. I mostly want to use this build-off as a forcing function to make me sort out my winter building situation. I don't have a facility that works in cold weather at the moment.

A suitcase bass that functions as both is a cool idea (and a nice twist on the air space theme!). I'm not sure what sub-on-a-stick would look like... but I want to see It! I'd try to make a logical decision, except that neither is that logical in the first place.

The squiggles are close, but not quite. Think of an acoustic body with internal folded duct work like in a labyrinth speaker. The theory is that the length of the duct is chosen to accentuate lower frequencies.

Put a neck on it and and use the bridge to drive the speaker and voila - a Sub-woofer-on-a-stick.
Don't ask how or why I thought of this. There is no coherent answer.
From the research that I've done so far...
Given the above, I would try to make the shape look like a "normal" ABG to conceal the Pandora's box, within.
- The length of the duct is related to 1/4 of the wavelength of the target frequency. So to tune for low A at 55 Hz, the duct should be about 60" long. This should help amplify half an octave up and down.
- The cross section of the duct should be as close to the cross section of the speaker as possible. This would make the body far too large, so I plan to compromise on this rule of thumb.
- I'm thinking of having a bridge on some kind of resonator cone in place of a powered speaker.
- The duct should be damped with lots of sound absorbing material to reduce standing waves and pesky guitar frequency wanky sounds.
- I will make the rest up as I go along.
That is mostly what I have in mind, but I get the impression that the speaker and the port should face in the same direction. So the port would be on the front, looking like a normal sound hole.You could make the ducts in a spiral, with a cone sitting in the middle, discharge through a port on the side
