Winter Build Off 2022 - Get Ready

Opinions wanted
So I got my 1:1 drawing made, but the body has an overall length of 23". The wood I had set aside is only 21".
So do I
1. Source other piece of wood that is long enough
2. Piece it together, which will screw up the grain pattern I wanted
3. Piece it together and go with an opaque finish

I've been insisting that if we ever bring a drum kit in, we get an electronic kit (probably an Alesis)
Less space and you can use headphones. Win-win

I made the bouts more symmetrical when I redid this, but I don't think I lost more than an inch behind the bridge.
Can you maybe rework the drawing?
I wouldn't glue end to end pieces, or paint it. I mean, you might still make it into heaven (even though both those things are wrong), but I wouldn't chance it.

I vote option 1. Stick with your vision so you don't end up with regrets. Most wood isn't that expensive anyway.

I'd say 1.
But there's also...
4. Center the top on the body... with 1 inch pieces glued on either end.
Do a natural grain center...out to dark opaque burst finish around the edges that will easily cover that inch.

E. Get your wood stretcher out?

Seriously though, you will either need to get a longer piece, or if you're feeling froggy, slice at a diagonal and add a contrasting piece across the middle.

It's ash, so not terribly pricy. And I'm not set on ash, it's just what I had. But then buy a new piece doesn't stick with the theme as well.

It's a good suggestion though, thanks. I'm probably not to that point. First build and the finish was going to be my biggest weakness.

Not sure if this will work since it's a 35" scale with a heavy neck. The upper horn will need to stay where it is.

I'll see if I can get it laid out and see what would line up. I was hoping to have bookmatched grain patterns, but that's not that important really.

Thanks for the input. I was hoping to get more of the wood planed today, but I'm stuck helping out with 6th grade math homework...:banghead::banghead::banghead::dead:

Nothing, if you use a piece of wood that doesn't look good or piece the body together.
I just think it would be a shame to cut a body from a nice piece of wood and make a nice instrument and then cover the whole thing up with paint. Especially just to hide one little blemish or seam at the very end.
I thought it was a cool idea to make a body from a log. It seems like the kinda thing you'd wanna leave natural and show off. "That bass right there? That's right, I carved that bad boy out of a tree trunk".
I dunno, covering it with paint seems like it takes away from that effect.

Well, I did an about face on my electronics plan and ordered a new pickup today. Hopefully it arrives in time to let me start when the build off starts. :D I also decided that as a headless tuner backup plan, I'd order the Guyker headless single string tuners in a set of 5. I've never seen any basses with them yet but they look substantially better than the eBay cheapies that are also on their way to me from my friend. I already have a regular bridge and tuner combo if both headless options suck. :thumbsup:

Well I'm glad I'm not the only one abandoning previous ideas at this point

I get the body and most of the hardware. Not happy with the body cuts. I think the body was a second. Might need more work than it's worth.

Originally was going to abandon the Aerodyne tuners. The more I look at them, the more I like them. Better quality than the other I bought, and the smoked chrome is growing on me.

That leaves my chrome pickups not matching the tuners

That tinted gloss spray they sell for darkening your vehicle taillights works well for turning regular chrome into smoked chrome. :thumbsup:
