Winter Build-Off 2022: Speed Bass

I haven't done it in a build yet, but I'm going to try fairy light LEDs under the fretboard right behind luminlay dots. My hope is they will be charged from the inside and will glow externally, or can be just lit up and enough light would pass through. Of course I'll share once I've tried it. I also have a variety of coloured glow powders which have worked well in my tests. :)
So that is essentially what I did with the "Kubickenbacker" build. I did fairy lights and mixed glow powder into epoxy and made all the markers like that. The hope, as you said, being that the LEDs would charge the glow powder inlays...

It didn't really work that great.

From what I've gathered, in order to make something remain glowing longer, you really need to maximize the powder. In other words, a shallow inlay of powder and epoxy won't work as well as a deeper one. And the deeper and more concentrated with powder you get, you obviously lose translucency.

And as bright as the fairy seem, they don't really charge the powder well. I'm double checking it now, as I still have the carcass of that bass in the shop. The 6V source that lights the LEDs does a good job making the fronts bright (white dot inlays) and the sides suffer from varying degrees of powder, as well as some needed to be redone, so they were inconsistent, but visible.

By comparison, here's them charged for 10 seconds with a 1000 lumen flashlight (external, of course):

The basic thing seems to be, if you want powder to charge, the LEDs need to be VERY bright. If that brightness was in a neck inlay, it would likely be blindingly distracting unless the glow powder dulled it enough. But at that point, it may almost end up opaque.

Fairy lights as normal LED inlays though, that works great! I did my other basses with no glow, just a touch of white paint in the epoxy to make it visible and translucent. With consistent depth in mounting, they are awesome.
It would likely work with glow to make the epoxy translucent and you could carry a small light or laser pointer or something to charge them, should you need the subtle light and not LEDs in that moment.

Those are my findings at least. I wouldn't hate attempting fiber optics instead some day, but haven't found a source for that. Maybe I should for this?
 
Fiber optic rods are common in firearm and archery sights. A quick search shows a few different colors and sizes from TruGlo. https://www.truglo.com/replacement-fiber-optics/
Those are typically scintillation (or scintillating) fiber - they are "lit" by the coating fluorescing on exposure to light (look ma, no batteries or LEDs) and get brighter the longer they are. They are neat, but the outside of the fiber needs to be exposed to light (not much use in a dark club, or buried in a neck.) I have some long skinny fibers and shorter fatter rods of that in my "materials to play with" pile, gotten somewhere a lot less spendy than that.

Refreshing my memory, that would be "light or other radiation" but I don't think playing Chernobyl or Fukushima is on my bucket list, as it would have to be right at the end and I could probably only pick one.

Plastic fiber optics intended more for transmission of light from end to end are widely available, though.

Well, the one on the left belongs to Roger and his attachment to it seems near unbreakable.

The one on the right was a bass I built from the remnants of what prompted the one on the left to even exist. It's kind of a "sibling" of sorts and I really love it. There are a few errors that make it "imperfect" but I love it just the same.
(Plus, I was told I can't ever sell it and if I had to, it already has been claimed, so it would require some kind of special dispensation...)

Your post certainly gave me a grim reminder that I've been falling behind on this build, due to all sorts of things. The last post was over a month ago and the end of the build-off is about another month away...

It's funny, because I just finished my first build and I've already been told by my children that if I ever sell it they will kill me. They literally want it mentioned in the will, there's already a fight over it. :roflmao:

Okay, so I did make some moves today. Took a piece of the hickory and cut it down enough to make a bookmatched top:

This will go on a mahogany back blank that I had glued at little while back, but hadn't pictured yet. Traced the template and plotted out areas I could hog out for chambers (then did it and forgot to get pics, but speed is the key, right?):

Then mixed up epoxy, got a ton of clamps out, and made a clamp farm:

It's all oversized but plotted out so that I can attach the template and cut it perfectly, avoiding my previous issues of glue on the edges.

Just have to figure out the plan with the neck now, then the pickup covers....
 
This particular piece is a weird mix, to be honest. The soft spots (lightest areas) are really soft. The hard parts are quite tough. The tough spots do feel a bit like maple, the soft spots like basswood.
I'm gonna likely soak this top in epoxy at some point in the finishing process.

Looks like the rotary switches will fit, though, but no push/pulls.

Also, the battery will need to lay flat, so I needed to modify my typical cavity to have no vertical holding area.

And since this top is a little funky in spots, I poured epoxy into the cavity to solidify the control mounting section (not pictured).

Bumped the pickups ahead. Here's how I made some covers:

1) Found a scrap piece of old mahogany in the cutoff pile and plotted out some stuff:

2) Made a template to cut out enough area for 2 pickups in each cover:

3) Cut and sanded into shape (MM 5 soapbar shape):
