The bevels are routed. Now that the actual body sides are quite narrow I realize that I won't be able to use a normal side jack as as I planned
. I'm not the biggest fan of front jacks, so perhaps a barrel-style jack would be an option. Let's see.
There's some progress on the neck as well. I have recently seen quite a few posts here in the LC where neck shaping was described as a daunting and difficult task. That's why I wanted to share my neck shaping method. It's probably nothing new and I don't claim it to be the best, but it works for me.
The first step is faceting. There's a lot to read about this already, so I won't go into much detail. Starting with the square neck, you mark the center of each facet (side and back) and establish a new facet up to these two lines. Then rinse and repeat until there are ca. 6-8 facets on each half of the neck. Actually, don't rinse the neck, just repeat. At that point it is difficult to get more surfaces with a rasp, that's when I start rounding the profile with a file, just to knock down any ridges that came from the previous step.
Now the neck has a rough profile, but the surface is rough and the profile is about as consistent as it gets by using the centerlines of the facets (by eye). To make sure that the neck profile is a true interpolation between the profiles at the nut and at the bridge, I use a sanding beam that is exactly the same length between heel and nut (or volute). Then I use strokes across the neck, not along the neck to even out the neck profile and repeatedly check if it's symmetric. Pencil lines help to keep track of any low spots. Once this is finished and I like the profile, I start hand sanding with 120grit along the neck to get rid of scratches from the previous steps. If I don't like it, I go back to the sanding beam for a small adjustment or back to the shinto rasp for radical reshaping. I usually end up removing some extra material from the shoulder, but that's just a personal preference.
After the profile is done, I shape and blend the heel and headstock transitions. Those depend on the instrument, heel shape and volute/no volute. Done!
