This begs the question, if you achieve total conversion of sound energy to mass, how loudly and how long would you have to play your bass to generate enough mass to make another bass?

Excellent question. Let's calculate it. I'm assuming an electric bass here. I don't know how to type up formulas here on TB, so I include the actual calculation as an image. Bottom line is, even if you have the infamous 500 kW PA system from the 1988 Iron maiden tour and choose a lightweight bass, it will still take a little more than 15 000 years, and an acoustic bass will take much longer.

Alright, back to the build. A loooooong week after filling the inlay I could finally sand off the overfill and reveal the actual inlay. So far so good. A little air bubble showed up in the bottom right path, but it might disappear during radiusing. There's also a little bump in the top left path where two arcs join, but coincidentally it will be covered by the 12th fret :smug:.

There's also some residual resin on the surface, which you can see as "smearing" in the dark picture. It will be removed during radiusing, there's no need to do anything about it now.

Here's the truth about the afterglow effect. The inlay has a decent glow effect and I'm sure it will be visible on a typical darker stage, but it's not as extreme as the pictures make it look. Still, for me it's definitely strong enough.

Now that the fretboard was flat again I glued it onto the neck and clamped it to my sanding beam:

On the agenda this weekend we have many small steps for the neck and headstock.

After gluing the fretboard on, I routed the sides of the neck and the headstock shape. Then I thicknessed the back of the neck and the headstock. There's a rounded transition between neck and headstock, but no volute this time. I'm thinking that a scarf-jointed multilaminate neck with purpleheart will do fine with a volute. Also, this will be thinnest neck I've built so far. It's 21mm (0.83") at the nut and 24mm (0.94") at the heel. We'll see how that feels. It certainly fits into the concept of this being a modern "shreddy" instrument.

Just like in my Ziricote dream build, I put some weight relief into the headstock. Of course the areas that the string retainers are screwed into remain solid. The weight difference isn't all that much, but with the leverage of a baritone neck every little bit helps.

The front of the headstock got a flamed maple veneer with a black poplar veneer underneath. For now I just trimmed it flush, but I will probably put some bevels on it to expose the black layer. My plan is to do the same with the body, but we'll cross that bridge when we get there.

I'm afraid you are off by the factor of 1000 here. It's gonna take a bit longer than 15 million years :bookworm:

2.7*1000*(3e8)**2/500e3/3.154e+7 = 1.5409e+07
vs
2.7*(3e8)**2/500e3/3.154e+7 = 15409
Please explain where that factor of 1000 comes from. Are you using grams for mass, and if so, why?

I did my calculation consistently in SI units (kilograms, meters, seconds). I put in the weight in kg, the speed of light as m/s and the power as W (or J/s or kg m^2 s^-3).

Please explain where that factor of 1000 comes from. Are you using grams for mass, and if so, why?

I did my calculation consistently in SI units (kilograms, meters, seconds). I put in the weight in kg, the speed of light as m/s and the power as W (or J/s or kg m^2 s^-3).
Let's test this empirically so we can settle this discourse once and for all. :whistle:

=1.54E4 years

I just think it is great that we have a thread where:
  1. Someone calculated how long you would need to have a 500 kW running to come up with enough matter to build a bass
  2. Someone else checked the calculation

EDIT: OIC, the question was about the mass unit, yes it should be kg not g. If you want to do the calculation in grams, you can, but you need to also convert 500000 W into 500000000 g*m^2/s^3 so you end up with:

=2.7*1000*300000000^2/(500000*1000)/60/60/24/365

=1.54E4 years

Yup, both units are ok as long if they're used consistently and as you showed they give the same result. Thanks for checking!

15400 years is pretty long. I better get started on that, or it won't make the deadline for the WBO 17423.
