Worked on the setup a bit more this morning. The screws I was using for the pickups turned out to be too short. I chose those over the supplied screws as I thought the supplied screws were too long, but I couldn't get the pickups high enough. So I swapped them out for the supplied screws. Fortunately, they didn't come out of the back, though I'm sure that they are within 1/16" of an inch from the coming through the back, if not even closer.
And the front view:
They are silver instead of the black screws I was previously using, but they are pretty small, so I don't think they detract too much visually.
I also ordered a new nut. I'm not happy with the way I cut this one, so I'll work on that area when the new one comes in.

That thing came out really cool.
I don’t know if you’ve used Danish oil a lot but I’ve had great luck with adding a couple of coats of Butcher’s wax on top. It adds a little sheen without getting super glossy and it feels super smooth. Any furniture wax would do the same. (ie: Minwax)
It doesn’t offer any protection, really, and it needs to be reapplied periodically but it looks and feels real nice.

Thanks! This is the first time I've used Danish Oil. I'll have to look for some Butchers wax. I think the Danish Oil will become my new "go-to finish.
I actually have some Dunlop Carnauba stuff that came in my Dunlop Maintenance kit. Perhaps I'll try some of that.
You can always try it on a piece of scrap first.
I used Renaissance wax over my oiled walnut body and it looks beautiful and has held up great.

I've been using that Watco Danish Oil on some projects around the house recently. It's too early for me to comment on how it'll fare over time, but it's supposed to be appropriate for outdoor finishes and exposure, so presumably it will offer a robust instrument finish. I'm probably going to slop a few coats of it on my neck build project currently in progress. I'm hoping it will offer some basic protection for the wood while still maintaining a bare feel.

So I ordered and received some new nuts from Amazon. What is wrong with this picture?
They appear to be 6 string acoustic/classical guitar nuts. They are wider than 1.75" which they were advertised to be - closer to 2 inches.
I could cut them down and re-slot them, but then what's the point of buying them pre-made? I ordered another Tusq nut which should be here tomorrow. I'm not sure if I'll return these or just wallow in a pool of self pity and wait for my 1-star review to post.
You obviously didn’t put enough strings on your bass.
If it’s tall enough, just cut the top clean and cut the slots from scratch.
EDIT: We were typing at the same time. It does stink that you ordered a slotted nut and now have to slot it yourself, but I never like the spacing on pre-slotted nuts anyway.
