A lot of the hip hop events around here, erupt into violence.

So do a lot of rock and roll concerts. So do a lot of country concerts. And a lot of those kinds of concerts don't.

No, not at all. I've been listening to it since the 80's.

Interesting to me how some current opinions of hip-hop sound like my parents' generation and their opinions on rock & roll back in the day. You'd think musicians would be open-minded about music.

I'm personally VERY open minded, musically. My daughters listen to it and I've asked them what they like about it, etc., and I have REALLY tried to get see if I can something out of it that I enjoy and I just can't. There's just nothing in it, for me.

I probably should have said "I like seeing live musicians when I go to a concert." It was poorly worded.

That comment is based on racial and social prejudices. One of the more recent music fests where there was a violent attack occurred at a country music fest in Las Vegas, and that resulted in deaths.

Do you think violence at events where people gather in large numbers is an isolated incident though? Woodstock is no exception. There certainly won't be 3 days of peace.

Somewhat on topic... Chance the Rapper does more for charity and the youth of Chicago than probably any other musician/celebrity I can think of.

Don’t forget about the death during a Rolling Stones concert at Altamont. And the kids crushed to death filling an arena to see The Who in Cincinnati.

Statements like this are a bit pointless unless you're citing specifics, man...

There were a bunch of sexual assaults at Woodstock 99. Very bad. Festivals should be safe for everyone.

Altamont 1969... no hip-hop

The event is best known for considerable violence, including the stabbing death of Meredith Hunter and three accidental deaths: two caused by a Invalid Link Removed car accident, and one by LSD-induced drowning in an irrigation canal. Scores were injured, numerous cars were stolen and then abandoned, and there was extensive property damage.

And you’ve never heard or read about any violence at events that aren’t featuring hip-hop?

Hip-hop events are no more prone to erupt into violence than any other type of event.

You are more apt to get killed in a house of worship than at a hip-hop event.

I don't know. I know if I never heard rock music before, and someone was like "Oh you'll love it! Check this out!" and then they played Nickelback, I'd probably swear off all rock music immediately.

"Several studies have focused on rap music, and found them to contain more violence than other genres. They also found viewers to be more likely to accept the use of violence, to accept violence against women, and to commit violent or aggressive acts themselves."

Not all hiphop is just "pushing a button on a computer." Sure, there's some of that out there, but the majority of successful live hiphop acts, especially on this level, have live musicians on stage, frequently playing things that are far more interesting (or at least complex) compositionally than a typical rock or folk song. I've played live bass in hiphop bands, among many other genres, since 2007 and it consistently has a more diverse palette of live bass parts than either rock or folk. Please stop lumping all hiphop into this supposed "it's just computers making music" category.

Is that true? I mean, I'm not saying you're wrong. I would guess that you're probably right. But if we're telling @Sixgunn to provide proof to backup his claim, in all fairness you should backup your's.

Oh geez, that paper sounds like it was written by those Congressional wives in the 80's all upset that Twisted Sister had a video with Neidermeyer from Animal House getting beaten up by over-the-top cartoony violence.

I just cited three music fests where deaths occurred and none were hip-hop.
