Worship Bass Pedalboards

Here are a couple of pics of the small pedalboard I've put together for the church at which I'm presently serving. As can been seen, it's very basic, but that's all I really need. Also, it solves almost all of the monitoring issues I've been experiencing. I'm planning on testing it this Sunday.

Pedalboard:

Pedaltrain Nano​

Power:

Truetone 1 Spot – Turbo Tuner, Rolls PM351
48V Phantom Power – Radial J48​

Signal Path:

Bass > Sonic Research Turbo Tuner ST-300 mini > Radial Engineering J48 > FOH and Rolls PM351.​

The Radial J48 feeds Front Of House (FOH – Behringer X32 Digital Mixing Console) with a balanced signal (BALANCED OUTPUT 600 OHM) and also sends an unbalanced signal (THRU) to the instrument in (INST. IN) of the Rolls Personal Monitor Station PM351.
(Note that the THRU port of the Radial J48 is a 'straight through' parallel connection of its INPUT port.)

The Rolls PM351 accepts a monitor mix from FOH to its line input (LINE INPUT).

The Rolls PM351 will allow me to adjust the overall monitor mix from the FOH with the LINE LEVEL knob and adjust my own bass level via the INST. LEVEL knob.

As some of you may know, the Behringer X32 board allows each musician to control his/her monitor mix of all of the instrument/vocal tracks via an app running on a smart phone, tablet or laptop/computer. This works well in many cases, but I've been experiencing issues with being able to hear myself, sudden (and sometimes violent) volume adjustments happening to individual musicians in my monitor mix at various times, etc. With my pedalboard as configured above I'll be able to control the overall monitor mix volume and since my bass sound goes directly to the PM351 (Bass > Tuner > J48 > PM351), I won't have to rely on FOH mixing to be able to hear myself at all times. I'll turn the Bass volume down to 0 in the X32 app and rely solely on the PM351 to monitor my bass sound and adjust it with the volume of the other musicians.

It is my hope that this will allow me to better serve the Lord and His church.

I do the same. I tried it with just the x32 mix and like it better with the instrument separate.

I (and most of our worship team) uses the PM50s. I use it at three different venues I play at. Two have analog mixers and i get an aux mix and at my church on Sunday morning we have an x32. The rolls works perfect at each location. Just give me a reasonable mix of important stuff (lead vocal, lead instrument, and drums) and I'm good to go. Way way way better than any wedge I've ever had.

The drive I'm using is labeled BassDist1 in the Zoom MS60B. The manual says it is an emulation of the Boss DS-1.

I didn't see this one in the effects list of the B3n but I noticed the B3n has a lot of newer drive selections.

Either way will work, both ways are just parallel bypassed I think.

Ah... ok. Well, I'm set up as Turbo Tuner > J48 > FOH/PM351 for now. We'll see how it fairs.

Oh, I forgot to mention in case anyone is wondering... I'm using 3M Dual Lock on the board and pedals. Works great.

Looking ahead at my playing commitments for the next few months, both at church and the rock band, I've come up with this simplified board for the summer. I'll take it out for a spin tomorrow

Interesting. Even though I play 90% of the time with the noble low cut on I too have a thimpinator on my board.

I really want to get that Rolls, but don't have the funds for gear purchases right now. But it's such a great solution for iems and singers + musicians. Glad someone built something like that.

Thank you @jmbjandfam and @Gatlin . Yeah I don't think the 3n has that one. I know the B3 did. I've been using the BB preamp sim with pretty good results or the MXR M80 sim which the 3, MS, and 3n all share i believe.

I was able to use the small church pedalboard this morning for 2 services. Here are my thoughts:

Pros

• Easy carry in because of its diminutive size
• Easy setup
  • Plug in 4 cables:
    • Bass > Tuner
    • FOH mix (TRS) cable > PM351 LINE INPUT
    • Radial J48 BALANCED OUTPUT 600 OHM XLR > FOH
    • IEM cable > Rolls PM351 HEADPHONE OUTPUTS
• Essentially plug 'n play
  • Adjust 2 knobs:
    • INST. LEVEL knob for my bass volume
    • LINE LEVEL knob for the volume of the rest of the band
• For the 1st time, I could consistently hear myself well.
• Bass sound (INST. LEVEL) mixed well with the mix from the other musicians (LINE LEVEL) without the need for EQ

Cons

• Does not provide protection from spurious and unwanted sounds such as:
  • Feedback
  • Loud pops, ticks, clicks, etc.
  • Abrupt and/or extreme volume increases
  • Anything else that could cause hearing damage

I can honestly say the board was a pleasure to use this morning. Everything sounded clear and articulate, and consistently so. I found myself spending more time listening to (and therefore better communicating with) the other musicians because I was better able to hear them in the context of my own playing. This 'tool' is worth it for that alone!

Of course, nothing is perfect. Ideally, the PM351 would have a limiter (like the Rolls PM55P) which would help tackle much of the items in the Cons category above.

Summing up
I'm very happy with the results I experienced this morning and am looking forward to using this board for the foreseeable future.

I completely agree for the need for limiters. Two weeks ago when I last played at church, there were three loud issues that came through the Aviom system but I had my Tasty Blender with its adjustable limiters and did not hear any of that noise. The drummer on the other hand quickly ripped off his headphones at least once due to the sudden noise.
