As I debate preamps and/or DI's with myself, this from an article taking about DI's and the Radial website which has lots of useful information on DI's...

"The question is, how much should you spend on YOURS? Well, as you may have also noticed, the guys over at Radial Engineering seem to have all the answers when it comes to direct boxes…
And it just so happens they have an answer this question as well. According to their 5:1 Rule, they say that for every 5 dollars you spent on your instrument, you should invest 1 dollar on your direct box…Meaning a 1000 dollar guitar, would warrant using a 200 dollar direct box. Makes sense, right? Now we know."

So my $2,500 - $2,800 basses require a $500+ DI.

I've been going through quite a few preamps, DI's and Compressors over the last 2 years to finally arrive at what is the best tone I've ever had live it IEM. Just added a RNDI to the end of chain and sending the final signal to the FOH and IEM. These are my favorite pedals in each category and have helped me do away with amps.

that's the only thing I don't like about the Starlifter. Wish the input and output was on opposite sides.

My drummer once asked why all my things were wired backwards. He thought it should have be wired like you read. Left to right.

What kind of power supply are you using? There are some AC-powered pedals that I'd like to try, but my MXR IsoBrick being all DC is preventing that from happening. And I'm not really prepared to buy a power strip just yet. Although, that would be an easy solution, lol. I like having only one thing to plug in.

The one I've had for the last couple years is the T Rex Chameleon. It was the only one I could find that would power the Starlifter. Also has a 18v port for pedals that need it also. Dead quiet and works perfectly.

Curious why you aren't using the Starlifter DI? I kind of like the preamps that have DI's in them. 2 birds with one stone kind of thing.

I have been using just the Starlifter for the last year or so and love it. Decided to buy a used RNDI after hearing demos this past week. The combination of the 2 is crazy good. Each one by theirselves is really good but combined it's downright magical.

The transformer in the RNDI helps alot. It sounds like there is an equally good transformer in the Grace ALiX. The Grace products have piqued my interest. My Oracle is not going anywhere though.

I'm still trying to decide if a) I NEED a preamp and b) is my Radial Pro good enough. The LA-1A really does a lot for my tone. I'm not sure if I need eq or a super good (REDDI/RNDI) DI.

Now that there are no gigs, it's hard to evaluate live gear.

I've never been a "tube" guy. SS has been fine, still is for my amp - Genzler MG350 and 12V-T cab - which sounds even better with the tube comp in front. Maybe the tubes in my compressor are enough? Don't need a tube DI?

What was the verdict about the balanced out from the Leveling Amp? Is it functioning normally where it makes the boost unable to be used? If I am remembering the problem you were having correctly.

"Need" and "good enough" are all relative. Preamps for me are all about coloration and amp simulation (if that's what you want. Perfectly clean preamps are also widely available). With you being an active bass player and an "anti-effect-ite", I feel there would be less need for an external preamp. You can control your eq from your bass. Especially if there isn't any particularly colored amp or "tubey" tone you're looking for, and you don't use other effects like drives. As a passive bass player, I always want a preamp so I can have some control over the EQ and level of my bass(es).

I've noticed one thing about you, you talk about your gas or wants for months and even sometimes years before you make a jump lol.yiu eventually get there though.

I hearken back to all the times people would be discussing large pedalboards on the forum, and you would post (and repost) the picture of your cute little pedalboard with just a tuner, DI, and Rolls. And now you've got a compressor! You've come so far! Lol. Just be careful. If you start researching preamps, there's no turning back. You'll think you're satisfied . . . until you're not anymore. And you'd be surprised what a person can convince themselves that they "need." I've gone from needing three pedals to needing about 12. Turn back now before it's too late! Save yourself! It's too late for the rest of us!

I cAn relate to this post. 2 years ago the only pedal I though I would ever have was my line 6 Wireless. Now I've tried multiple preamps, DI's, compressors, and tuners. Now I have this lol. It's a expensive journey but I actually am loving no amp packing. I have the best bass tone I've ever had.
