Been through quite a few tuners, but Sonic Research ST-300 Mini is definitely my fav... To be honest, I loved the older model ST-200, but sold it to buy the mini TC Polytune 2...it took up less room, and did well. But as soon as Sonic Research came out with the mini ST-300...I immediately went back.
Curious on your thoughts on the ST-300 vs Polytune Mini. What did you find you liked better with the ST-300?
I was late to the SR tuner party (@ExaltBass had been telling me about them for a long time...) The accuracy is very addicting, and they have the best screen, imo... I use the larger ST300, with the long-life battery option.
I went from a Polytune Mini to ST-300 Mini. Main thing for me is speed. Where the Polytune takes a second to register, the ST-300 is instant.
I wasn't sure whether I'd like strobe at first (always used needle type tuner) - but now I'll never go back. Probably the biggest possible downside is accuracy.....and by that I mean the strobe tuner is so accurate, that you have to realize that if it's moving really slowly, it's in tune.....if you try to get it to stop completely all the time, it'll take you forever.
Exactly what Eadger and kevk said, is the exact reason I like the Sonic Research tuners.
I would say that in a lot of ways, analog is way better. FM Synthesis? What kind of bass sounds is he hoping for? 1980s DX7 bell sounds? I wouldn't listen to what he says as far as recommendations.

I think he's talking about "Take On Me" kinds of sounds. I mean, if you're talking synth "bass" you're talking Moog, right.
I think if you want something that's going to work for both worship and cover band, you're going to want to go analogue. I can guarantee that FM is going to be more time in the manual than playing. Digital emulation of analogue is ok. That's more of a difference between purism or not
I definitely like the analog Moog sound for sure. More fat, full than digital. I think I've decided that a Moog Sub 25 would be a nice compromise between full/mini keys, size and weight. The Sub 37 is just so big and complex. The Sub 25 (Sub Phatty) is a little more straight forward. 16 presets which are plenty for me. Knobs do stuff. There are "secret key codes" and stuff to access hidden abilities but those are probably not things I'll be getting into for that kind of detail. $900 gets me a Sub 25 and a bag to carry it. I have all the cable, DI and stand already. It's almost $1,800 for a Sub 37 and bag. Probably overkill for my needs.
I think the Sub25 is a good choice. I would buy that if I was looking for a bass synth.
Really good compromise, Steve...the best synth tones (imo) and works for either application (church/cover)...
Perhaps consider a Minitaur. Easily had in the $400s (new, non-discounted is $500). Add a midi from Monoprice (also cheap and good - around $45) and you're golden.
I suppose that is an option. A little cheaper. Set up would be difficult though? Need a stand for the keyboard and something for the unit. It seems like more of a studio/desktop option. The Sub 25 is all in one. Costs a few hundred more, but you get the convenience and presets.
I too have been digging into this as well and think that I might ask for the Sub 25 from Santa.
Here's my setup. Got 2 oscillators going from the Minotaur plus 3 from the Model D going into a mixer pedal.
Have a preamp DI and the Zoom B1Four for any funky effects.
Horses for courses. If you want an all-in-one, it'll need to be put on a table or stand regardless.
Also, the Minitaur has presets as well, controllable from the midi.

another option is the Behringer Model D. The guy from Hillsong uses that. That's even more affordable.
I've watched that video, but Behringer...I have to admit I'm not fond of them. I know. I'm a snob. At about 5-6 seconds in you see the MOOG logo very clearly...
Yeah, whatever gets the job done I guess. Honestly I'd just be using a midi controller with Mainstage but that's just me.
