We had a new person start attending our church in the last couple of months who has experience installing and running sound systems for churches and is volunteering to help the tech team (yeah!). He also plays bass and guitar (yeah again).
The other Sunday I noticed that he was using a wireless unit with his bass and it was working well in our auditorium. After the service I asked him about it and he told me it was a Line 6 Relay G30 wireless unit and he showed me how it worked.
I went home and found a used one online for a good price and bought it. I figured that if nothing else, I would use it when I was doing lessons or transposing songs at the computer where I don't need a long cable to connect my bass to my audio interface. It worked well for that purpose so then I tried it at a memorial service last week and it worked great for that as well.
My next move was to get an A/B switch and feed both an instrument cable and the wireless receiver into the switch and route either signal to the rest of the pedals on my board. That way, if I am using the wireless unit and the batteries go dead, I can plug my cable into my bass and quickly switch over the signal path without having to unplug anything on my board or make any popping sounds in the PA.
That would be much faster than me fishing out the wireless transmitter from its pouch on my bass strap and changing the batteries (and then putting the transmitter back into the pouch). The A/B switch also allows me to easily use a cable with my bass when I don't want to use the wireless system (without having to unplug and re-route things on my board).
In my search for the A/B switch, I ran across
Saturnworks Pedals that make custom pedals of all sorts. They had several options and customizations for A/B switches. I bought their black micro A/B switch with dual color LED and had them put a blue Saturn planet on it (I liked that image best out the stock choices for that pedal size and did not feel like submitting my own image for them to put on the pedal). The pedal is only 2 inches square and fits nicely where I wanted it on my small board. The LED gives me a visual of which signal I am sending through the board (the instrument cable or the wireless). I looked at three other A/B pedals they had (including one that had a separate kill switch) but decided the small form factor of the micro was going to fit best on my board.
