Worship Bass Pedalboards

Hey all, some troubleshooting advice would be appreciated:

My pedalboard consists of HXS, compressor, and volume pedal (all my effects and synths and cool stuff in the HXS) is no particular order.

I'm going through into the house system via DI box. Not ideal for me but some compromises had to be made.

I also didn't know that cable wiring around a volume pedal was so confusing. I thought it was:

guitar-volume pedal-compressor-HX Stomp-to house system

but it's something like

guitar-HX Stomp-compressor-volume pedal

I saw a video just now where the volume or expression pedal should be connected to the EXP slot, not the input or output...I had just hooked everything up with input and output slots on each pedal....

Please advise? I may just strip it all down and stick with HXS and volume pedal, tbh..

I think some things are just noisy together. I'm not smart enough to know why. The interference of electronics, JFET's, flux capacitors? I tried to use an HX Stomp with my Broughton SVPre, both of which are perfectly quiet on their own. But together I got this weird oscillating whining sound out of the SVPre. I dunno.

Helix is the issue. It digital hum.

Do you have a true volume pedal or an expression pedal? An expression pedal would connect to the Stomp and control a volume block on the Stomp (or other parameters) A true volume pedal would be in your chain somewhere to control volume. If a true volume pedal, I would probably put it last before the DI to mute everything or work swells and such. Try it in different locations and see what works best for you.

Yea. The 7 has plenty of juice for the Stomp with you use that doubler cable. It was more of the SVPRE for some reason, and especially when I used any kind of distortion/fuzz on the Stomp in conjunction with the SVPRE.

I just replaced the SVPre with running an Ampeg SVT4 block in my Stomp in front of every patch. Takes up DSP, but sounds fantastic.

I don’t think I tried the SVPre in a loop with the Stomp. Might be worth a shot. But as it is, I just use the SVPre on my practice board.

The volume pedal goes where you want it to. If you want to use it to control bass volume in real time, it goes first after your tuner. If you want it to work closely with that other pedal, do what they suggest. If you want it to be a like a master volume for your effects, put it just before your preamp. There are only suggested orders for certain things, not universally correct orders.

Sunday office today. Arrived late, so I grabbed whatever cables were available to setup quickly... so cables are a bit chaotic this morning. My cable management is a bit better in my post yesterday.

Actual version of my pedalboard. Hiero FAKK in front as special EQ shaper next DSM Simplifier. Standard FX loop is RAT with Ruetz mod (fuzz is always better when is RAT before :thumbsup: ), Hiero BEAD and EHX Freeze with delay and reverb (both from local builder - clones of DBA pedals) for some noise and ambient experiments. Parallel FX is DOD Meatbox as lowend boost and LPF on 500Hz. Great for drone/doom.

Depends on your end goals. There's really not a "wrong" way to do this, it just depends on what you want everything used for.

Compressor before the stomp can work if you need to boost your input signal, or want a more even signal hitting your other pedals. Downside is that it can squash dynamics, so some people don't like how it interacts with drives and would rather have the compressor at the end of the chain to just reduce peaks.

Volume really has three positions it can be in the chain: Before everything, where it functions as more of a guitar volume knob than anything, after drive, where it will keep your overall drive level intact but let you swell into delays and reverbs, or end of chain, where it's mainly a mute switch.

I currently have my setup Compressor -> Stomp -> Volume -> external delay. I use the compressor to level out my signal for my octave and other effects pre-Stomp, then my dedicated volume after to let me do swells with my delay, even though I use it as a mute more often than not. Once I streamline a few things, I'll be ditching the external delay and swapping my volume for an expression pedal, which would go in the expression jack to control volumes on the Stomp directly.

In my opinion, unless you've got a particular compressor you really like or are running out of room in your presets, a compressor block in the Stomp can be end of chain compression just fine.

if you used a expression pedal into the stomp you could set it as a volume pedal and stick it anywhere you wanted!
