The Nolly part was how I learned about the Element. Wanting a practice tool that could stay on my board has been a thing for a while too. Annoyed with running everything through my Zoom B1Four (which IS a great practice tool but I’m trying to minimize cables and cords) is what kept it top of mind. But seeing it on your board and reading your use cases just made me pull the trigger lol. Found a decent deal on the verb so we’ll see!

The Element & The Harmonic Booster are the only two DG pedals worth having IMO. I've owned all the DG Dirt pedals at one point or another & they simply don't do it for me (and that's near heresy for a guy who plays Dingwalls & Djent!).... There are much better options for getting those tones with other pedals.

If you want that percussive mid focused tone that DG is known for, but without any hype & you want it to actually sound great without the need for a ton of post production studio magic get a Damnation Audio MBD-2 or MBD.

I didn't try them all, but I wasn't a big fan of the VMT or the Alpha Omega. But, don't listen to me, I didn't love the Capo either. **gaaasp**

I just sold my spare THDI to a friend that has a 70's era hand-wired Marshall Bass rig. He is very happy with the THDI for all his gigs where he doesn't want to lug the big stack.

I use my THDI at the end of my signal chain. It allows a little quick tweaking for the venue.

On a side note... How do you like the clear barefoot buttons? I have been hesitant for durability reasons, but I think I'd like the light shining through.

@MikoFX Do you happen to know if the LA-1A can be powered from a Cioks HI5? I mean if I'm gonna be cool like you I have to get a LA-1A right?? j/k It's been on my wish list for a while as well.

Same here, I love the PC2A, but if the LA-1A can double down on replacing the PC and Kahn then I'd definitely come out ahead. The CAPO is on the short list too, but im also trying to save for another bass, ah it never ends

The LA-1A sounds fantastic with the stock JJ's that came with it, but I'll be rolling some NOS JAN Phillips tubes into it in the next day or so to see how much of a difference they make. I'm hoping for increased harmonic content, however even if it turns out that there is zero 'improvement' I'll still be way more than satisfied with it!

Edited: Effectrode recommends specific NOS JAN Phillips tubes in the manual. Those are the ones I ordered. Expect to pay about $50 a pop.

I ran the LA-1A as my compressor/DI using the balanced out for a while. It sounded great.

I tried the PC-2A and really liked it. It did add some nice color to my tone. I liked it more for the color than the compression...although the compression was nice too.

Once I've knocked my bass wishlist down, then I'll consider such a pricey pedal. Not that I don't think it would be worth it or anything haha.

I looked into the DLA-2A. It's one of those pedals that I'm kind of afraid to try, because it might sound so good that I'll start wanting one.

Cab sims can be useful for a couple of situations.

1. If you’re playing direct into PA that’s not being specifically eq’d for bass or you have a sound guy that just doesn’t know how to eq. This is my situation quite a bit. The built in lpf/hpf in a cabsim helps.

2. I think it helps tame a lot of overdrives. Gives them more pleasing breakup.

Absolutely love everything there except the slash chords. There’s no way I could see that playing live. I would just have the bass note with an asterisk or something.

Would 100% play with that board.

Did a little comparison between the Trickfish Overdrive, Kasleder Jellyfish, and the CAL Grizzly this evening.

Pictured below are the Tres Amigos with settings that are dialed to VERY closely replicate the exact same tone. In a blind test I wouldn't be able to tell which was which.

They're definitely in the same ball park, however if you look at the level of the drive knobs on each of them you get an idea of their various ranges of drive.

From least drive available to most drive available:
•Grizzly
•Jellyfish
•Trickfish

This is also the first time I've done a side-by-side comparison between the Jellyfish & the Grizzly.

The Jellyfish comes across as having almost the exact same clipping circuit as the Grizzly, except in place of the separate Clean/OD/Distortion knobs that the Grizzly has the Jellyfish rolls them into a single Drive knob that blends everything all at once. Add to that an overall output volume knob & a powerful Bass/Treble EQ and I honestly think the Jellyfish might be pretty darn close to the pedal some of us have mentioned we wished the Grizzly to be. (i.e. It solves most of the minor gripes I and others have with it).

The Treble knob is pre gain, so it's interactive with the clipping circuit & the Bass knob is post gain, so the lowend can be perfectly balanced without adding any additional saturation.

As a note, I recall someone mentioning a while back that they thought the Jellyfish was based on the Free the Tone Black Vehicle. I can say with absolute certainty that they are two VERY different circuits with very different voicings. Both are great, but one's a sea dwelling invertebrate that'll sting ya and somehow convince you to beg for more, while the other one is an obstacle defying paramilitary automotive marvel with optional ICBM package.

If you're a person who isn't really into OD/Distortion, but you'd like an OD/Distortion pedal on your board, any of these are a great entry point. Think of them as drive pedals for people who don't like drive pedals.

I used number charts since early 00’s. Not so much anymore. When I did fill in gigs for some bands I had to learn 60+ in a few weeks and the number system was essential for memory and reference. It’s a genius system IMO.
