I did see that. What a great resource.
I've played a number of the preamps posted, and what struck me was that I'm not nearly as good picking out which is which based on sound. But I can tell almost 100% of the time tell which one is the Noble when doing my own a/b playing tests. I think a lot of it comes down to how they 'feel' playing them.
I love the Caveman pre but it has a different feel to it. Same with the Luce. Etc.

Btw, I'm really getting FOMO not knowing what the secret pre is…lol.

He shared in the YouTube comments - It's a Orchid Micro DI - which are utterly brilliant active DIs Orchid Electronics


As an aside take the JDI and think 1/5 the cost (at least in the UK) - but utterly bomb proof. I used to go to a church where every DI was one, and then when I moved to current church first thing I did on joining the worship team was buy one to give them! They are not as sexy as your JDI/Pinstripe/Luce/RNDI but they do what they do very well...

At church right now. This is my current live board. I've moved the Cali to the front of chain before the BMS and OC2 and it is better tracking. Did tweak all my settings.

Very cool. Reminds me of the Radial Stage Bug series DI, which are all over the place at my main church.

Well, I didn't put it away for a while. Instead, I kept doing a/b tests and decided to take it to a service.
And it killed.

Got the JHS Morning Glory Clean on Friday, sounded good at home so slapped it on my board for today's service.

Sounded great and added some depth and girth to the signal without being over powering. Cranked it for the last song to test it out and sounded real nice. The blend doesn't seem to go full wet or dry, so can be full clean and still hear harmonics from the drive. All in all a pleasant experience.

Now that I'm at a desktop, I thought I'd elaborate on the Noble -vs- the Luce. As I mentioned, the Noble has been on my board for a bit over 2 years. Every service and every practices session. In fact, in two years I never played bass without it - except for a few brief periods of auditioning other preamps. So, that is the sound that I am used to.

When I got the Luce, I knew there was potential, but it wasn't the sound I was used to. I did a lot of a/b testing and tried a lot of different combos with the Luce. It sounds good on it's own, but I preferred it with at least some additional EQ or OD. So, I did a lot of pairings and got a bit burnt out. The plan was to put it away and revisit it when I had some time off from playing. Well, I should have known better. I just love trying new gear too much.
So, I took the best pairing--the Lightspeed OD with the tone and drive down a bit into the Luce. This gave me a tiny bit of grit and a bit of high end reduction. And I just ran through the set a few times until I started to get the Noble sound out of my head, so to speak.

Playing through the Luce is kind of making me rethink how I was using the Noble. The EQ on the Noble is incredible. On some pedals, cranking the lows is massive, but overpowering. The Noble is just so musical, and you can add a ton of low end without it being too boomy. BUT, that might have been a detrimant in this situation. I might have been pushing it too much. It would probably work better in a more sparse mix, but I think the Luce, with minimal EQ sits better for this particular mix. That is especially true with the in ears. I could hear myself so clearly. I may want to go back to the Noble and try it 'flat.' The Noble mid scoop is a lot more noticable when doing a/b testing though.

The biggest difference for me is how they feel, especially with a pick. Before I was playing worship music, I didn't use a pick at all. The Noble has this 'mushyness'-- I don't mean that as a bad thing. I quite like it at times. It's just so hard to describe tone. It's a bit slower, wheras the Luce is a bit punchier--though not as punchy as the Kahn or Caveman. This was something that I was always trying to overcome with the Noble. That's why I started using a compressor. It seemed to have better pick definition. Playing fingerstyle with the Noble is such a joy though. With the Luce, the pick attack is there.

I was surprised that I could hear quite the difference in the sanctuary during sound check (thank you Shure wireless).

In the end, there are pros and cons to each. I was scheduled to play bass in two weeks, but we had a few cancellations, so I will be playing drums then. It will be a few more weeks, but I'm going to bring the Luce back next time I'm on bass and further compare. I don't know if it was the way I was using the Noble, but I preferred the Luce on this service. It's still too early to tell.

EB Slinkies on my Sterling. It's forcing me to play with a softer hand which isn't a bad thing. Digging in gives some clank when needed. I haven't played a 5 string in several years but have a Dingwall on order. Thought I might as well start retraining myself with the low B. I play with an amp on stage and man, feeling that deep low end has been fun. Again I know this isn't some new revelation but it's new to me for now. Quite enjoying it. Plus it's making me think a bit more when playing and that's probably a good thing too

Did you notice if the Luce has any baked in EQ contour? That shoot out video recently posted seemed like the Luce had a hefty bottom similar to Caveman. But hard to tell from the video.

The lows are nice, full and clear. Overall, the whole freq range is sweet. I'm not hearing a baked in tone. But, then again, as much as I love new gear, I don't really run any analysis much further than 'do I like this?' I once saw the Noble freq charts and got dizzy. :)
It's been a while since I tried the Caveman, but I seem to remember it punching...hard. The Luce has more punch than the Noble, but it's in between the two, IMO.
