If you look at any genre of music you will see that every bass is used. If you go to any bass manufacturer's website, you will see that their basses are used in every genre.

It DOESN"T MATTER! Use what you like. The most important thing is knowing how to use the EQ on your bass and amp in order to get the tone you want.

Outside of Bluegrass Metal fusion, I think it would be bad for most other styles of metal.

That is simply beyond terrifying, just the idea of it creeps me out badly.
