Update:

So, I quit the band. I met up with the singer at his place (I had to pick up gear), and told him that I was done. He basically shrugged and said that the drummer has a buddy that wants to play bass with them. I'm not sure if that was actually the case or he was just being a knob.

A couple of days later he emailed me asking me to do a show in February because it would be easier for him to have me do it rather than break in a new guy. I have not responded.

If you do the February gig charge him dearly in the 300.00 range and get paid before you play.

I have had to deal with this sort of moron as well.

Like many of you have posted on this thread, I don't know why I stuck around as long as I did. In hindsight, I should have left long ago. I look back on so many instances where I was treated like crap and just wonder ***? Why did I let myself get treated that way? But it's over and done with now and I know that I won't let a situation like that happen again - on to bigger and better things!

Did you tell him why you were leaving? Did he ask? You seem to have yada yada yada'ed over that part...

I'd tell him you'll do it if you get paid (whatever you deem acceptable - I'd say about $100-$150) beforehand. If he agrees then make sure you get paid before you even load up for the gig, and do not do more than one rehearsal before the gig. If he declines then don't say anything harsh towards him. Just say thanks anyways and be on your way.

Love it when a plan comes together. However, be professional, always. Respond to the email saying you'll be unable to play the gig but wish him well (while, of course, waving him the finger at the same time.)

Here's what I would do. Respond to his Feb gig request and say, you'll do it, but ONLY if he pays you 1/3rd of the take from the previous 10 gigs (at least, I would probably say EVERY previous gig, or some lump sum you can feel good about, but it should be pretty sizeable, at least a few hundred) BEFORE the gig, you do no more than 2 or 3 rehearsal before the show, and he pays you 1/3 of the money from the Feb gig. Then he can accept that or not. Maybe you'll decide to negotiate a bit on the upfront amount, that's up to you.

The situation is basically, what is it worth it to this guy to not have to scramble to find a new person and teach them the songs before the show, vs what would it take for you to play with this guy again.

But DO NOT play with him unless you are getting paid VERY well one way or the other (and you should get as much as possible up front).

Also, if you do play the show and do any rehearsals, don't leave any gear behind.
