Would you quit this band?

I love this type threads. I was recently debating letting my girlfriend go, which I did, but not before reading up on similar experiences online, and many follow this thread's focus... I know its a bad situation, I know there's better opportunities out there, but I'm used to this for X reason.

Dump em, mourn em, move on to something better.

You've worked for your share of the money so why isn't he paying you? That's actually quite offensive. As some have said, confront him, demand the situation changes or threaten to leave. And don't back down just because he doesn't. If he refuses, leave.

+1 to everyone said to quit.

People think that you put energy into things you love, but I have found the opposite. That you love the things you put energy into. Stop putting energy into it, and you'll see the love evaporate, and in this situation, that's not a bad thing.

after I built facebook and myspace band pages and populated them with several hundred "fans", he deleted them shortly thereafter because he didn't feel they were necessary) and insists that the music alone will bring the people to us.

Ahh, he's one of those pretentious "artiste'" types. Run, don't walk, away. Those types of people rarely ever taste any success, because they falsely believe that, somehow, people will just hear their music and automatically be enamored with it. And their music is rarely ever as good as they think it is in their own heads. These people have to pull their heads from their asses and realize that being successful in music - whether you're just trying to be a solid cover band or become the next Top 40 artist - requires leadership and business sense...and oh yeah, hard work that just goes beyond writing, learning, and performing.

...and of course, dude needs to pay you!

Wait a minute........

We're expected to share in the costs (rehearsal, gear rental, travel expenses, etc.) yet if we do get paid for a show, he keeps that money. It's been made clear that I'm replaceable and he has used subs in the past when I've been unavailable for a gig (we gig an average of once a month).

This is not your band. You are a hired gun who doesn't or won't get paid!

Sorry, I woulda been gone a long time ago! For the record, if it was me, I probably woulda kicked his @$$!

+1. I doubt the bandleader views the OP as an equal partner. Letting him abuse you doesn't help anyone. It's like volunteering and putting money into a restaurant that's about to go out of business so you won't be out of a job.

+1. I may as well get fired and get my money than stick around and get abused further.
