I'm more interested in its playable reliability (electronics, setup, comfort) than looks. I have that sort of musical ego that I couldn't care less what it looks like as long as I can outplay anyone that scoffs at it.

If it were local to me I would be all over that! For $30 the neck alone is worth it! I would use the neck, pickup and hardware for another project and promptly throw the body in my fireplace!

Are there any clues as to what model it used to be?

It has a fender headstock and truss rod access at the heal like an American standard p bass, but rear access to the electronics is odd to me. If you pop the neck off lets see if there's any date or other info?

We should probably be optimistic and assume it's just a truss and maybe shim issue. He got it from a shop that's 98% as is used gear. They have good tech's at that franchise usually but it takes them a while to get to every new incoming piece.
