would you tolerate dead spot on A string?

a couple of dB lower in volume or micro seconds less sustain? I guess theoretically this is possible.

the problem with dead spots is that they can be hidden by existing between the two frequencies which make up two fretted notes.. so you aren't going to notice it easily. However, you slap some new string with extra tension on, or make some other modification to you bass, and it moves the dead spot, and voila! it suddenly appears.
 
A few troubleshooting ideas...

1. Check to make sure the bridge screws are all tight.

2. Check the tuning machine to make sure it is not loose/out of adjustment somehow.

3. Any weird buzz, setup issues going on?

4. Does it happen through multiple rigs in different rooms? (to make sure it's not an overtone/wolf tone thing you are hearing in one particular place)

I had a similar problem with an A string deadspot on a bass I no longer own - a big dead ringer from the fretted B up to the fretted D. Everything sounded muted, no attack, no punch, no sustain, just a "dink" and that was it!

I don't see how this is going to affect a single note?

The 19th fret (on the A string only) buzzes against the 20th, and if I pluck hard, will ring out the 20th fret note. I assumed this fret was a tad high and I could bang it down a tad or raise up the saddle.

yes, though different amps/DI make it sound a bit different.

Actually, some of these are reasonable questions. I will add one more, based on personal experience:

Make sure you don't have a defective string. I once had an E string that the winding was loose on, didn't recognize the issue for a day or two, but noticed all kinds of weirdness in the lower reaches of that particular string. I was wiping off some goop and when I did, the windings moved....:eek:....brought it to the attention of the shop I got the set from, they contacted the manufacturer (who will remain unnamed), and I got a full free set out of it.

A "dead spot" is a resonance between the pitch of the string and the overall resonance of the instrument. It will happen to some degree on just about every stringed instrument. As such, it can be affected or caused by many variables, including loose screws in bridges or tuning machines.

I'd make sure EVERYTHING on the bass that needs to be tightened up IS, and I would also check to make sure there is nothing "off" about the A string, THEN if it is still exhibiting the issue, I'd go back to the dealer and ask what they are willing to do to help you out. If they don't offer anything, go to the manufacturer.
 
Both my Fenders have slight dead spots on the fifth fret of the A string. My Sadowsky NYC has a dead spot on the G string at the seventh fret. I tend to fixate on dead spots and it can be incredibly annoying. In the end, I just accept them (unless they are really bad) and try not to fixate as much. The truth is, I'm usually the only one who hears the dead spot. And come on, do you think the quality control at Fender in the 60s was better than it is today? I figure it's all part of the Fender sound. Again, I'm not suggesting one accept defects in an instrument when they are truly problematic, but wood is wood - it's sonically "uneven" by nature. If note-to-note evenness is of the utmost importance to you, you might want to check out a bass with a graphite neck.
 
No... I would not, could not "tolerate" a dead spot on an 'A' string, a dead line, a dead zone, some dead skin, a dead date... not in a box, not with a fox, not in a house, not with a mouse, not in a chair, not with a bear, not in a cave, not on a train, not when I eat, not while I shave........ (anyway, you get the idea)
 
I think that dead spots relate to resonant frequencies of the neck. The wood itself. The weight of both the neck and body and how they interact play a significant role. The note being played is cancelled out or choked by the way the bass responds to the vibration. I've found that the same neck on a different body may not have the same dead spot (it will probably be on another note though). I have heard stories of upright bass luthiers removing wood from the end of fingerboards to affect dead spots -- by changing the weight of the neck/fingerboard. (once again, probably chasing the deadspot somewhere else) I dont think that pickups, strings, or setups have much to do with dead spots. Since 5 strings have larger, heavier necks, it's not uncommon for them to have deadspots in different places than the typical 4. The thing to do is to check a bass carefully before buying, and it's why it's a crapshoot to buy a bass without having played it.

Here are common dead spot areas I've encountered on 4-string, Fender-type basses.

G string -- either the 4th,5th,6th, or 7th frets. 6th (C#) is most common IMO.

D string -- 7th or 8th. the 7th (B) is most common.

A string -- 3rd -- curse of the weak C note!

E string -- 2nd, 3rd, 4th, 5th. most common is 4th (Ab). That damn note always wants to fight.

Many good basses will only have one of the dead spots on the G string. That's not a real big deal because that note will usually sustain when played on the D string. But, with low notes on the E, there's no where else to play them. You're screwed. Also, having to play a C on the E string 8th fret sounds a lot boomier than the 3rd on the A, so that one sucks too if it's bad. The dead B (7th) on the A string is a pain because a playing B on the G string is a much thinner sound. They all suck, really.

Bottom line: Don't buy a bass with nasty dead spots. To the person with the problematic 5 string, I'd see if I could return the whole bass and get another.


Has anyone tried this trick? :

If your bass has a typical dead spot on the G string, say C or C#, fret the C or C# note an octave below on the A string (don't play it, just keep your finger down) at the same time with another finger, fret the dead note on the G and pluck that note. You should hear a significant reduction of deadness. :D
 
The mass of the neck is a determining factor in where a dead spot will "reside" (this is why the newer Sadowskys have thicker headstocks than the older models). If you have a problem with dead spots, you could try using a Fatfinger (a small device you attach to your headstock to increase mass) - I've heard they work.
 
The poor man's fat finger is a small "C" clamp on the headstock
Used to use that trick in the studio so that a note would ring forever without compressing the whole track.

Caution: be sure your c clamp doesn't have a rivit that protrudes past the flat section when it's tight; don't ask me how I know
