Just a fun way of saying when you purchased your first bass.
Over the last 17/18 years I'm on my 10th, but only have 3 now. I wish I only had 1 - ya know: "THE ONE"
Found this post and laughed. Oh young Tim of 12 years ago. I'm up to 113 basses I've owned over the years now, and that's probably forgetting a few.
And yet somehow I was a better musician 12 years ago!

My best estimate is about 70.

Agreed, I came in expecting to compare how many times we've played wagon wheel, mustang sally, brown eyed girl, and other songs audiences love but players hate...
LOL! In my case NONE. I've never really been in a true cover band, though I've done a few scattered cover gigs and I think I had to play B.E.G. once (at least there's a bass solo.)

I've owned 30 basses in the last 7 years but only kept 6!
I feel a little better saying that the 6 I own now are keepers, though.
Most of mine were financed through the sale of previous basses and/or a combination of creative credit card churning.
About 33 and 6 presently is my tally. List is in my profile. Most of that came in a 15 year window that started a couple years after joining TB and ended a couple years ago.
I'm playing the best basses I've ever owned and am definitely in the "these are keepers" mindset. Haven't had GAS in a couple years and I might even sell one more.
I have to re-visit this post every now and then and laugh at old versions of myself. 2008 Tim was so naive. Even 2020 Tim had no idea what would be to come. I legitimately think some of this behavior is a result of extreme anxiety/undiagnosed mild OCD. I should probably show this list to my therapist but I'm sure she has much more interest in talking about my relationship with my parents, how my first marriage imploded, and the death of my stepson shortly after my second wedding.
Anyway that's all too dark for Talkbass but please enjoy the lists I've compiled below...filling in notes wherever I could, using my Talkbass profile as a template. Hopefully this thread will stick around so I can refer back to it as I get older and my memory fades.

Well thats my bass story good and bad .
Out of 20 basses still own five.
I have a rule for myself if I want a new bass that's over a certain amount ($ 3000-4000)
I have to sell one to get one and the bass sold is usually the one that gets played the least.

Love it. Some really high end stuff on your list. I could have cut my bass list to a tenth of its current state had I just waited and invested in Wals and Foderas

I went through about 100+/- basses from 2006 to 2016. I tried to make a list including what I liked and didn't like about each but it was too depressing.
I really struggle with getting rid of basses, pedals are easier, amps have been let go of too. Basses tend to stay.
I've owned 9 basses, still have 8 of them, and the one that I sold was years ago.

Thank you Tim! After reading the list I was overcome with gratitude!!
I didn't own a bass for nearly eight years due to alcohol and drug addiction.
Living from paycheck to paycheck and selling or pawning everything I owned except my car.
I finally surrendered and started living a new way of life one day at time.This is the only reason I own basses and most important still alive to post this!
