Wow! My record is making the 2011 lists big time.

While I dig the album-version of Midnight City, there's something very special about the Fallon performance. Call me silly, but I highly prefer the sax solo on Fallon to the album version.

Congratulations, JMJ! That is too cool! I can't even imagine how great it must feel to be involved with one of/the top albums of the year. And yet, you deign to help out us lowly little nobodies here on TB... That is a mark of nobility. You sir, are a true gentleman. Thanks for sharing with us.

Thanks, everyone. Most kind! Pleases me to no end to see the ripples moving outward from the impact of this record. It's exactly what Anthony Gonzalez and I hoped for, but had no idea to what degree would actually happen.

Best,
Justin

So with M83's record gaining accolades for 2011, it loks like you'll have to push the new Beck release for 2012 to keep the ball rolling... (in my dreams)

Also, I have secured tickets for M83 at the 9:30 Club (Washington, DC) in March... any indication that you'll be joining them? :hyper:

Dude, what a coincidence...you get named on all these best of 2011 lists, and I got my Baba Booey parody of Emerson, Lake And Palmer's "Nutrocker" played on Howard Stern last week. That's about equal, right?

:D

Heard that and LOVED it. My pal Josh is the guy who did the Law And Order Baba Booey theme a while back. Also a great bass player, coincidentally. Um, dentally, baba booey?

Wow, I've heard the M83 tune on Sirius for a while now, and really dug it from both the nostalgia side of the house (as mentioned above), and also as a fan of acts such as AIR, Trentomoller, etc (places where you find cool bass parts without thinking you'd find them). Regardless, I didn't know you were attached JMJ! Congrats!

No VS models, no. I'm in a good space with my hot girlfriend that I got, so I didn't push the issue. ;)

Cheers, Echo.

Alecduncan: There is a chance. Slim, but a chance nonetheless. :) You'll be the first to know.

LOL! Thanks dude. Your pal Josh did a great job on that L&O parody, too. Sounded like he did the "guitar" part through a guitar amp...brilliant! One of the best I've heard.

Decided to read your sub-forum here yesterday and found this thread, immediately started listening to this record. Wow. It's been on repeat. The bass on Reunion immediately stood out as awesome. There is also a bass solo that I wanted to call out specifically but will just have to keep listening and find it again.

Thanks for a great record!

Marshall

You're welcome, and thank you! I like that bass on Reunion, too! The problem is, I also played about 964 tracks of guitar on that so it's a bit indistinct, but it still came out as intended. :)

Here's more off of Wikipedia

Critical reception:

"Midnight City" has received much praise from critics, with some critics calling it the best song of 2011. Pitchfork Media's Brandon Stosuy wrote: "'Midnight City' comes off like Gonzalez's '1979.' The parallels are there, from the instantly memorable riff to the gentle sense of longing, but 'Midnight City' feels like a song destined to move and change as it continues into the future. Rather than tapping into our collective memory, it's a soundtrack for building new ones."

Ryan Reed of PopMatters also praised the song, writing: "On this transcendent standout [...] Anthony Gonzalez and co-synth-scientist Justin Meldal-Johnsen build layer upon layer of keys, arena-sized drums, and vocal atmospherics (not mentioning one of the tastiest sax solos this side of a Springsteen record). The result? The synth Sistine Chapel."

Josh Jackson of Paste wrote that the song "[...] sees Anthony Gonzalez at his spacey, dramatic best," while Spin's Charles Aaron described the song as "[...] Korg synths set to 'stunned.'"

The track was ranked fifth on Triple J's Hottest 100 listing for 2011.

Accolades:

Pitchfork Media:Top 100 Tracks of 2011
Paste: 50 Best Songs of 2011
PopMatters: 75 Best Songs of 2011
Spin: 20 Best Songs of 2011
Triple J: Hottest 100
