I'm sure those more expensive flagship basses also have better hardware, electronics and pickups as well. This particular Sire only has different wood. Same everything else. My friends tried it at NAMM.

Perhaps poor choice of wording on my part - IMO, a budget alternative brand has no "cool factor". The main attraction is the value for the entry-level price point, which I think is great! But once you're getting into that price territory I don't see much of a reason to choose Sire over something else. Maybe I'm superficial, but now even when I see Marcus playing a Sire at his shows I wince a little.

In comparing to the other models, it looks like it's the same hardware, pickups and preamp. The V10 has a roasted neck and fancy top. But, my guess is that it's real purpose is to show a higher end model that costs $1500 and then that makes the $799 models appear to be an even better value.

You are quoting a 4 year old press release style article that also says these are designed to be affordable and that start at 399. No V7 is now less than 599.

Are you also pumped up by their poured on thick self promotion about their "premium" pickups or the "heritage" preamp?

I don't dispute that the brand makes quality basses. But many brands have great QC and use better parts to boot.

I am genuinely interested now: what bass would you recommend (preferably that Thomann sells as I have a long list of other stuff that I am going to buy from them) for $600 or under that has as good QC and looks as a Sire? I am not a fanboy by any means, I am looking for the best value for my money....

Good question. First though I have to say that the meaning of the discussion has gone off on a slight tangent. My general postings were in regard to the $1,500 model. My comment about the rise in prices wasn't necessarily a knock to the quality but just simply that Sires "mission" has changed. And the features they point out on the $1,500 bass are essentially the same they have on lower models, rolled edges, the same hardware, and the same preamp to begin with, so that's where my beef starts there.

Since the bass you're looking at is a J bass I went ahead and looked at the options on Thoman for J basses in the 5 to $700 range and you certainly have a point, I didn't really see that many great options to be honest. If you opened it up to me and I could pick any style of bass around that price I may tell you something different. Even though it's not for me, you may still think it's a good value and we can agree it's certainly not a dog with fleas.

oh yeah there are definitely other basses that are a good value, especially if I weren't after a Jazz style bass. The MIM Fender's and the better Squiers are good values, I just think the Sire V7 better fits what I am currently looking for. The G&L Tributes are also probably up there value wise, but I have never played one and they don't offer my preferred specifications. On the used market the old Ibanez ATKs are also incredibly good for the money, along with the Sterling by Musicman basses.
