Xsonics 212cf review and comparison

Lows being pushed out or pulled out are the more or less the same.

Highs out the back of the reversed speaker are shot up but the G version slot highs aren't much better off.

Therefore X and G cabs can be lumped into a single category. How about calling it a GX alignment?

The ONE thing you and I have in common is that we like light cabs. I haven't owned a cab over 45LBS in about 7 years.

Could I own a lighter cab than my 15/6? Probably, but there are some compromises I am not willing to make. For example, my cab will never give up on the B string.

I honestly think that you and I are the two hardest guys on bass cabs on the planet.

All the cabs that people claim do a respectable job of the low B are nowhere near enough for me and you seem to have had very similar experiences. If something can chuff, leak air, make noise, distort, I will make it happen :P

Two 12PR300s or 3012HOs would explode in about 20 seconds of me playing with my band at practice volume. Doesn't matter what magical alignment they have :)

I also understand the disbelief of a lot of people, and unless you play one you really don't have a basis for comparison. As far as handling the low B , the xsonics can do it without breakup or loss of articulation. I play a lot of modern heavy music requiring lots of fast articulated runs from B to E and there is absolutely no loss of articulation . And as far as getting the speaker to let loose I have run mine with a GK MB800 which is no slouch and the 212 could take it all . No problem !

Hey count me in on the being hard on a cab. :bassist:

There is nothing about the xsonics or lilg cabs that will let them overcome the limitations of the woofers they have chosen to achieve a loud low B string according to my perspective of loud low B :)

Neither one will be any better than an Ampeg 8x10 down low, which is nothing to be ashamed of, just is what it is.

* Disclaimer: I don't speak for all bass players and I certainly don't presume to speak for you. If it works for you, it works, and that's fine.

Well, honestly I dont think I am *that* hard on cabs, but I am picky.

I have also had a bit of bad luck... that AoN 15/6 and a pair of LDS 3012HO cabs left me wanting.

Now that I am no longer in that super loud dance club style band, things should be a little less demanding on my gear.

I am liking my mb800 alot these days... the pound per volume per tone ratio is quite good.

Kringle77s initial clip of that xs 212 was great. Excellent tone.

johnnybass01 also stated in what type of musical context he was using these cabs. Seems he used them in a very loud rock band. 'Loud rock band' being very subjective. Either of these cabs may or may not work for others in their 'loud rock band' situation. Johnnybass01 seems to have a preference for the Xsonics cab in his situation and that should be totally fine with others here.

Now, he did go into detail about some build issues he says he experienced. But he also stated maybe he had an earlier made cab. I don't think I've read here where anyone says 'yes my cab is not built like that now' or anything else to dispute what he says he found in the single cab he tried.

Again, that was his experience. You can't dispute he had both cabs and IIRC, he says he A/B'ed them at a gig. That goes a long way in my book. I mean I'm taking him at his word here that he was being honest and not just trying to stir things up. One never knows on the internet.

But I do hope there will be more TBers posting threads, esp with vids/sound clips of each of these makers' cabs. I'm still waiting for a clip of the Berg CN212 cab to make an assesment of those. As best as possible with what's offered of course. Ultimately, until I buy and try any of these cabs I'm considering, I'll really, never truly know. Peace y'all, e.

As I've read this thread at times I've laugh, at times learned and even said ouch a times. Notwithstanding, given that tone is relative, I feel confident Xsnoics and I with the aide of others set out to find a tone we like and many of you like too. I'm grateful to Johnnybass for his honest assessment of my cab, otherwise I would not have known a 1st generation cab was still in circulation. Most original cabs were sold locally, and I had a chance to upgrade them as things evolved (please let the new owner know I will upgrade at no cost).

I know guys do get passionate about gear, but its just that....gear. Brad is my friend and yours and I take responsibility for possibly straining relationships. My hope is that you will continue to give honest feedback, as it helps us to produce a better product for you. When spending your money you are the decider of what allows your musical voice to be best heard. If my or any cab does not enhance that voice projection then you should spend your money on what does. Hopefully, this will be last round of this fight.

Peace and blessings,
Rev

Ad me to your list of cab wranglers... I am BRUTAL..... I want it all!!!! But many of my gigs are with GIT players that like their Matchless or divided x13 100 watt git amps in larger rooms.. Thank god for IEMs

I started this thread , and in light of all that has been said back and forth it has become more of fight than anything else. I was just sharing my views on the xsonics 212cf and the Glasstone lil g . There were a lot of people just wondering what the difference was between the two . I'm sorry some felt offended at my findings and I really shouldn't have to say I'm sorry for that because it is what it is. I wish this thread would have stayed on track . I was in reality just giving my real world opinion . I am a gigging bassist and have certain needs tonally and the xsonics fit the bill for me that's all. In reality everyone has their favorite gear and feel a loyalty to a certain brand or maker and that is fine this will be my last statement this thread . These are two very different types of cabs , there really shouldn't be a comparison between the two. They don't sound similar .the only similarity is that they are both ultra compact 212 cabs with unconventional speaker loading .

Who was offended at your findings, Johnny?

I was offended that I belong to a forum with such mean little kids loosing track of what we are here for. The semantics about how a cabinet is assembled offered no positive direction to this post and was beat to death.

A comparative assessment of audio equipment is the only way to evaluate when the gear is used to make sound and not reproduce it. Furthermore, as pointed out in a different thread, everyone gets to have their own opinion regardless of what yours is.

Johnny, I appreciate the post and the respectful way you presented the information; I wonder if anyone here, or on this planet, have owned both of these esoteric cabinets at the same time. I haven't had the pleasure to try either out and I may not agree with your position but appreciate your input

Rev; nicely done; very cool of you to check in and try to offer some guidance for those who have temporarily lost their way.

Seamonkey; I more often than not disagree with your posts although I think you hit this one spot on. I would think that the same two drivers placed in a tiny box would not have the low end characteristics of the same two drivers loaded in a tuned larger enclosure. As you pointed out, the small cabinet design is wonderful thing assuming that you are not preaching the same specs can be had and that the smaller enclosures offer their own unique attributes that are focused on ease of use and portability.

If there is doubt about how the community might view the bickering, a poll would certainly eliminate any confusion as to who was interested in providing information and who was agenda driven and that would include my opinion as well.

My suggestion is to let bygones be bygones and lets move forward as a team when discussing one of the few things that we all love and have in common.

Hey how does the 212cf (ordered one today) handle lower volumes /watts with say a 400-500 watt head? Just wondering if you have to drive them hard to get them to open up? Have an eden wt-400 and a markbass LM lll. Planning on trading the LM lll for a LM tube 800. At some point I may scrap the MB for a shuttle 9.2 but for now I want to see how these heads work out.
Any one pair up these cabs with a smaller head yet..................
