Yamaha appreciating thread

I'd like to have the RBXJM2 - how much would they go for? It's a pity slapping would be tricky, because I really like it but for some reason the RBX774 doesn't really do anything any more for me.

On a completely unrelated note, I played some stuff in a store - a Rickenback 4003 (I thought it sounded horrible and felt bad), a 70's Jazz (not sure from when, but all I got was neckdive, I could barely play stuff), and a Warwick Corvette (sounded bad - where was the growl?). Those are three basses I used to love, and now I've gone completely off them, my heart is broken. Except for the Jazz, I loved it's neck.

Don't forget the cheapest Yammy of them all the RBX-170 is STILL a decent axe in its own right.

I picked up a like-new RBX-170 on e-bay for $170 AU (they sell at the shops here for about $360+). Slapped on D'Addario XL's on her, set her up, and let her rip.

Great bass for the price, for sure.

I'm considering the following mods:
-Shield the control cavity (not currently shielded)
-Replace the pots and cap (they're noiseless, but the volume pots only work well on last 1/4 turn, and that is annoying)
-Change the knobs to chrome domes to match the tuners (I don't dig black plastic)
-New Pickups? (probably won't go there, these ones sound fine...besides, I'll only know AFTER I get me a decent outboard pre-amp...lookin' at a Sadowsky or an Aggie...sorry, can't afford a Demeter...so don't suggest it)

Wiring and knobs should only set me back about $30-50 australian...not bad, really.

Oh yeah...cosmetically I was toying with the Idea of a stick-on tort guard. My bass is red and a tort or black guard would look great (white would look cool too.)

Anyway...Yammies are GREAT...I'd love to own a TRB5II AND a BB414...(accepting donations)

I currently own the model up from yours - RBX270.

I cannot stress how great this bass is. It's jazz pup isn't so great, and I can't slap on it to save my life (more down to my bad technique than the bass), but other than that, it's beautiful.

And in jade green. I love it to bits and will never sell it. It's a great bass, I couldn't have asked for a better first instrument.

just got this baby last sat..i would just like to ask if anyone of you tried this model -- RBX 800E..its active / 22 frets / and the bridge is somewhat similar to a floyd (except for the tremolo bar)....

got this for less than $90

My first real bass was a Yamaha BB300 too. No frills/great tone. Way better than a lot of "high end" stuf I have tried over the years. I essentially gave it away in an ill-advised trade in about '89 or so.

^^^ I play one of those as my main bass. I love the thing. Completely solid and versitile tone. The only mod that I've been considering is to upgrade the pickups to Barts. This is probably the last bass that you'll ever 'need'. Congrats!

I also play an old RBX 260, modded with two beefy humbuckers, a BadAssII bridge, and EMG BQC preamp. It's amazing responsive to damn near anyway I want to play it.

I had an RBX765A for a while. I don't have it anymore but it was a very nice bass, the active electronics were good, the action was cool and it looked great. It had the lovely translucent green finish; went very well with my drummers Yamaha beech custom also in a very similar finish!

Yamaha's are great basses, very under-appreciated I think. I have a friend who plays a TRB and a Nathan East. I have a BB605 - $350 that is my only bass right now. I did put about $300 worth of Bartolini preamp and pups in it, but I really love that Bart tone. The bass is light, plays great, and sounds great.

I've had Modulus, Ken Smith, Warwick, Lakland, G&L, etc. I'mnot sayin gthat this bass is the same as any of them, just saying that for the money, and my needs (I'm not a recording or gigging pro) that this bass is fantastic.

this TRB4II was my first "high-end" bass after starting out on a RBX270. i cannot praise this bass highly enough. excellent build quality, versatility, sound. its as tough as nails and i think its pretty sexy looking as well. it also has the most playable neck i have ever played - i dont know what the finish they use on the neck is but it is soooooo smooth. :hyper:

Cool, you got any sound clips, I managed to play on one in a shop and I fell in love with it.

Went looking for a MIM or MIJ Fender Jazz V for a back up to my MIA Jazz V but came home with this BBG5 instead.

Could have used just a plain color or burst but what the heck.
