About how does it take for these to break in? Right now they are as bright as some older GHS rounds I have on another jazz bass.

About how does it take for these to break in? Right now they are as bright as some older GHS rounds I have on another jazz bass.
After reading about the 9050CLs a few months ago, I tried them for the first time (which was also my first time using ANY flat wounds!), and I'm totally converted now. I have them strung on 6 of my 7 basses, and am holding one set of strings back because I have just heard today that they have been discontinued. I hope they last as long as everyone says, because I am not ready to start the hunt for strings all over again, and I have another bass coming to me in a week or so.

I have used the Fender 9050,s 105 E on two Jazz,s i play had about a year on both decent Flattys but not my favourite i paid $29.95 per set.I prefer the LaBella,s myself $32.95 @ Strings and Beyond.So i have two real decent broke in back ups to my LaBella,s i like..

Just got a set of 45/60/80/100 from Mktrat in a trade.
These strings are just excellent.
My favourite set is the 50/65/85/100 but these will do.

I hope the rumours arent true and Fender is stopping production of the flats.

I have owned two sets of Fender 9050 flats. Loved the sound, but I broke the G string on both sets while taking them on and off the bass. I have never broken a string, other than these two.
Looks to be like there's a lot of love for these strings! I've still got them on my P bass and I love 'em! Just wish I could use this bass more often. Back in May I scored a Thursday night gig playing in a cover band. We're playing two sets at a local resturaunt/bar. For the first few times I rotated between my J and my P bass, then I thought I'd see how my 5 string bass fared. Turns out that the guys love the 5 string so I've been using that. (I must say, those few low notes come in real handy due to the fact that we play so many songs in keys that are much differant from the recordings.)
But our drummer and a few friends and patron's have told me that as good as my 5 string sounds, the best sound was with my P bass with the 9050 flats. They all said "your bass just thumped thru."

I'm also a fender flat convert. Been using a set of 100-80-60-40 on my jazz for over a year now. They have mellowed a bit but still have that sweet top end that's more controllable IMO than chromes. I've yet to try them on my L1000. that could be explosive. HMMMM maybe that will be this weekends project.
regarding the posts about fender discontinuing these strings; I emailed Jason at bass strings on line and he said they are discontinuing the custom light gauge set (9050-CL). the others will still be available. whew! glad to hear that. Personally I prefer the SL set
I'm a bit surprised to hear this.
When some of the manufacturers are moving toward this "balanced tension" idea, I thought 9050CL would fit the trend the best. As far as I understand, 45-60-80-105 would be the best balanced set in term of overall tension. (Based on the info published by D'Addario for the Chromes.)
Having said that, I've been happy with 40-60-80-100 for the Chromes I've used in the past, so the discontinuation of 9050CL shouldn't be a big loss for me personally.
Thanks, this video's given me the desire for the 9050's on a Jazz when I get one. How do they sound broken in, do you think?
They sound the same as in the vid, but a little bit less "clangy". It's not muffled in any way, but I would call it "smooth, with articulation"
This thread has inspired me to replace my current year-old chromes with the set of 9050's in my string drawer. I've been looking for an alternative to tame the sometimes sizzly high end of the chromes for a while. I think these may just be the ticket. Thanks guys.
I felt the same way. I tried chromes first and loved the sound but had a hard time controlling the top end. I do not like to roll off my tone too much and I actually boost on my eq at about 3k which seems to open up my sound nicely. I find the fenders a little easier to control up top while still maintaining a nice round tone. I push my eq at about 120 HZ and these babies really deliver some tight thump there. While the chromes seem to have a brightness and presence up top about them, these fenders seem more present in the high mids which gives all the punch you'd ever want but you can dial it back too. I've been very pleased so far.
