Yes SUHR! Calling all Suhr players.. Post em'

A SUHR 5 could be a long time coming IMHO ??

There has been talk for a long time and let's face it ALL other bass builders have a 5 string model--EVERY last one of them.

After watching the shop tour on SUHR it is more than clear that their focus is on GUITARS and AMPS at least 95%. I saw one bass in 6 videos and it was just skimmed over.

If they wanted to make a 5 string they surely could and would have by now--when and IF they do is anybody's guess ?

They are a decent bass for the most part but 2 that I played at a dealer in Canada lately have beeen there for 3 years and they are still asking $3200 for one in Gold/3 band EQ, and $3800 for a quilt maple top. The control knobs on both basses are chintzy and do not operate smoothly.

The electronics impressed me very much on the Gold/ash body, pau ferro board no dots, very light weight and good balance. Neck on both was rather chunky past the 12th fret.

A bass player who works there and myself both preferred my Fender Custom Classic 4 string with alder body/maple board, gold sparkle-factory finish and 3 band eq ( ALL stock ) for TONE and PLAYABILITY over both SUHR basses and I payed almost half of the cost of both SUHR's in his shop !!!!!!. :hmm::hmm:

For you guys who love SUHR basses here is where they are going--and it is not North America--it is Germany. I counted 20 of them on Station Music - The Southern Proshop !!!!

There is one for sale at BASS NORTHWEST in Seattle for a very low price. It has been there for a while.

Great basses BUT very expensive and no resale or general buzz in the bass world I find. If you have one and like em--yeah KEEP EM !!!!! :):)

Suhr listens to his customers. There was a lot of talk a couple years ago about a certain feature on the guitars that players wanted. A lot of interest was expressed and Suhr responded by offering the feature. The Suhr bass players are just not as rabid. We have to form a 5-string coalition and generate a lot of noise! Tell your friends to post on the Suhr forum.

I played a Custom Classic a while back and it felt beautiful, build was fantastic, but then I plugged it in...yeuuch. It sounded hollow, no soul, no burp, like the best part of a jazz bass was scooped out. They had one of the older noiseless pickup designs that were really really bad sounding, maybe you played a newer version.

As far as price, I have made some calls to Suhr Guitar dealers, not stores that would typically stock a bass but could order one no problem, and their prices are very good, excellent as a matter of fact. Cosmo Music is the very last place I would go to if I was looking for a good deal.

So there you have it! Different people like different things! :D

I agree not all Custom Classic basses are going to blow you away, especially if it has been sitting on a wall in a music store for some time. I find that string condition is crucial on the ultimate tone from these basses, YES, more so than a regular Jazz. The preamps in the Custom Classic are very bright, even with all of the treble rolled off.

The SUHR is arguably the BEST SOUNDING preamp that I have encountered. As to feel of the basses themselves and the aesthetics ( the headstock is not very attractive and the only 20 frets thing ) are not overly pleasing and that is where the Custom Classic is a better feeling/playing and looking bass IMO.

I could not agree with you more on the cats at COSMO...whew !!!! They are hands down the most difficult persons I have dealt with on a business/pricing level than ANY music store I have been in the WORLD...seriously !!

Lastly yes there are some good prices on SUHR basses new out there at various US dealers, though very limited stock as compared to Station Music in Germany who has 20, AND the resale is not good no matter how one bounces the ball...just the way it is really, this is not a SADOWSKY.

Likewise RUDY's in New York can't sell very nice 5 string basses they have had for over 2 years and Roger Sadowsky likely sells at least 2-4 of his basses every day.......

FWIW I've always had a good shopping experience at Cosmo. They are head and shoulders better than the guys at any Long & McQuade in terms of product knowledge and experience. They have gone the extra mile for me a couple of times and their prices seem comparable to other Canadian retailers (who also deal with the same Canadian distributors and their inevitable markups). While they don't always seem as ready to deal on product, when they have a sale, it's usually a really good one. I've seen some deep discounts on the basses hanging on their wall depending on the sale. Then there's the summer auction, I picked up my Genz Benz Neox112t at a Cosmo auction for only $350!

I give them props for trying to have a good selection of above-average basses. Everybody else in town (except for Club Bass) has the usual prolliferation of Fenders, Epiphone, Squire and Ibanez basses and nothing much else. It does seem though that everybody in the GTA and their dog has MusicMan. They're as ubiquitous as belly buttons around here.

AND if anybody's listening, until Suhr brings out a 5-string I'm not at all interested. I think you could count on one hand the number of bass manufacturers who exclusively make only 4-string basses. Weird. I've said this before, that I would have seriously considered a Suhr if they had a 5-string. Instead, I'm a Sadowsky owner.

Every now and then, I'll play a Jazz bass that sounds so good, I scratch my head and ask "Does this sound better than my Suhr?" Several months back it was a Lakland Skyline Jazz. Yesterday it was an American Jazz. I was sure it was warmer, punchier, just better sounding, so brought in my Suhr Classic J. Bottom line, the tone of the Suhr was not just better, it was bigger...like being hit by a .50 cal. instead of a .22! And also the little details like the quality of the position markers, rosewood, tuners, setup, finish.
