I have a procedure which so far has eliminated this. When it gets to where we're going to meet up, I suggest a parking lot directly across the street from the local police precinct.

This seems to be a 'GO /NO-GO' filter for most, and the ones that back out when I tell them that's the only place I feel comfortable I consider lucky to have avoided.

At this point I wonder if some folks are just lonely.

Red Flag #1. I don't deal much on CL but when I do I always state that if the ad is still here it's still available. That question gets immediately ignored.

When I first started getting interested in bass, I answered a Craigslist ad for a five-string electric upright bass. I can't remember the brand and/or model, but it was from a well known maker. It's probably an excellent thing that the sale did not go through, since I ended up getting used to fretted, short-scale basses. At that time, I had way more money than common sense, so buying the bass would have been well within my means. My last e-mail from the seller said something like, "Well, I've got a buddy who is interested, but he can't afford it, so you're number two on the list."

I tried to find the e-mail thread, but couldn't. However, all is not lost, since I did find this one from Sacramento.Craigslist.org:

I think in many ways folks have gotten so used to acting like rude, spoiled children online that they've forgotten how to act with any civility when forced to interact with other human beings face to face. I refuse to be on Facebook, Twitter, et al, because of the things people say that frankly would lead to a dust-up if said to my face.

It's hard to imagine how civilization has become so uncivilized, and basic human respect and empathy are now ancient memories. We are all the poorer for this.

The question doesn't bother me. The lack of response after getting it answered positively makes no sense. It screams pointless. At least respond with what you're thinking regarding the item vs. leaving the conversation hanging. IME most folks who've asked me this question don't follow up.

There’s plenty of clueless, oblivious, pissy young people to also deal with on CL. It’s an across the spectrum thing...people are either reasonable, or they’re not.

I did speak with the guy, before the sale, on the phone. He seemed like a nice enough guy. There was no indication that he would be Dr. Jekyll/Mr. Hyde. When I mentioned that we should meet in front of Guitar Center he did aske me if I was a private seller or dealer. I said private seller. He texted good because I don't want to mess with that dealer nonsense. I should of asked what he meant by that. No sales tax?

I know lots of people that would rather work with a dealer and pay more for the item. The want the assurance that the item is not stolen property and they can return it if the item is broken.

Don't forget, folks. "Is this still available?" or words to that effect are the DEFAULT RECOMMENDED AND FILLED IN RESPONSE BY FACEBOOK. So if you just tap send without editing, that's what it sends the person. If the app recommends it, even makes it extra effort to NOT say that, then nobody should be offended by it.

Also, I just sent messages off to two different people last night showing interest in their ads (literally saying "I'll buy this for your asking price! When are you available and where would you like to meet?".

In both cases, several hours later, I was told that the item had already sold. So ya know, "Is this item still available" probably stems from that kind of situation. But I suspect it WAS available when I contacted them, but I was probably not first to respond, and the person waited out to see if first buyer would show up.

Again just pointing out that it's hard to be frustrated with "Is this still available?" or assume that it's a scammer in that case when there are 2 pretty good reasons for saying that, at least in FB marketplace.

I state multiple times that we are on our way to a funeral and cannot hang around, that it wasn't going to be sold that day and I would hold it until the next day if he wanted. The guy blew a bolt, so I hung up on him.

He called eleven more times that day.
