I would solder a jumper (small piece of wire) between those two terminals, then connect your pickup to one of them (either one is fine).

seem to be getting somehwere.. parralell and single both sound the same, and series sounds very similar just louder and a bit brighter. i'm not coniced i've done this correctly! the quest continues
Cheers, really appreciate the troubleshooting.
It is still at the point as mentioned above, where the toggle switch is the same on 2 settings but a bit louder/brighter on one.
Also, the mid pot when dialed right up just causes awful distortion and clipping. boo hoo.
All I found thru a search, but maybe it's what you need?

Cheers! the OP switch diagram looks to be wired differently to the nordstrand one though - probably not worth veering off from their deisgns?
I will take a clear (as possible) photo of the wiring tonight and annotate & upload for some more insightful feedback!
Is it possible that I've just soldered p the switch ( DPDT DPDT 3 position on-on-on mini toggle guitar switch ) upside down? Ie unsolder all joints on it, rotate 180 degrees, and resolder to the same pattern?
Doesn't matter- that would be the same as just turning the switch 180 degrees, so what was up is now down...
Did you compare your wiring to the 3rd image in this link?

I've done this illustration to clear up another total newb quetsion... I currently have my pickup wiered to the swtch and the switch only has a + connection and no minus (has plus and ground) as shown here:
Have i completely misread this? currnetly the outputs from the switch are:
black > ground
white > volume pot, right node
silver sheilding pickup wire > ground

The - from the pickup is the ground, I'm not sure what that means for you since I prefer passive electronics and I've never used a pre amp before, but if the pre amp has a - input I wired wire the ground from the switch to the - on the the pre but this is just speculation on my part since I've never used an on board pre amp. The series/split/parallel switch should work tho and I think you might have it wired right, parallel and single coil often sound pretty similar and series means a hotter output likes you have, does the center position have any 60cycle hum?

Do you have a wiring diagram of the N/S + and- wire color codes for that pickup? If not, they can be found with a meter and a screwdriver.
At this point, it may be worth it to loosen all the pots, gently lift them together, and put them into holes in the same pattern on a stiff piece of cardboard to eliminate the possibility of a grounding issue with the mid pot or something, plus, it's a lot easier to work on. Keeps from dropping solder balls into the cavity that could create problems and having to fish them out.
Once everything works correctly, just place it back into the cavity and tighten it up. If there's any problem then, it's a ground contact issue, most likely.

Thanks for all the help troubleshooting chaps. I did as @JustForSport suggested above and settled down the buzzing. I also finally drilled a hole from the cavity ground to the bridge and got that grounded, plus attached a grounding wire from ground that gets sandwhiched between the cover and cavity when it's closed to ground that. It works!
I think I was being an idiot with the switch: it was doing stuff, but I think the fact that I had all the preamp settings to full it wasn't so obvious. If I roll them right off, there's definately some differences.
Anyway - I took this bass to a jam last night! I still haven't installed fret dots (top only!!) and don't really play fretless, so I sounded terrible, but the lads loved its look and sound. Absolutely brilliant instrument to play in terms of action, neck profile and weight and balance.... so much so that I accidentally bought a 6 string headless tuner/bridge/headpiece today to build it a 6 string fretted twin. Oh dear.
I'll get the fret dots done then do fine tuning and try to get some good quality photos.

Sneak peek: the next one's going to be very similar to this but 6 string fretted. This axe fits in a guitar case, and I'm aiming to build a 6 string fretted so that I can get a double guitar bag and have the ultimate battle quiver! Prepared for every gig/jam with one bag, 24 frets, 11 strings, 2 basses. Yowser!
I really should start the build thread for that before I finish this one right.
