Friend of mine - pro musician here in Nashville - and I mused about this once years ago and his answer was illuminating: Basically he wouldn't get gear that was much different than what he already had... but he would hire S.I.R. to pick it up @ home, haul it around, set it up for any & all gigs while making sure everything was in perfect working order. That way he'd never have to schlep another spine-fusing rack / cabinet ever again and could just breeze in, play, then relax after the show.

I like that approach.
